Salem District: Road crews move to secondary roads, but do not expect bare pavement

SALEM – Motorists should continue to avoid travel if possible. Snowplow operators and contractors with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are working in 12-hour shifts, around the clock. Interstates and primary routes (routes numbered 1-599) are in good condition, with some minor slick spots.

Monday, crews are working on secondary routes (routes numbered 600 and above) in residential areas and subdivision streets. While these roads are being plowed now, they will not be cleared. Drivers should not expect bare pavement as snowpack and ice will remain. Significant improvement on secondary roads will be dependent on temperatures and sun throughout the week.

Delaying travel will enable VDOT crews to make more progress and clear roads sooner. When vehicles begin driving on covered secondary roads and neighborhood streets, snow and sleet become packed down, making it more difficult for snowplows to reach bare pavement.

With extremely low temperatures overnight, expect snowpack and ice to remain on many surfaces until temperatures rise.

Refreeze will be an ongoing issue this week. If roads appear wet, they could be icy. Drivers should use caution, particularly on bridges, shaded areas and higher elevations where ice can form first.
