Traffic Alert: Fort Lewis Church Road to close temporarily for bridge replacement in Roanoke County

SALEM — Weather permitting, starting on Saturday, March 21, the bridge over Stypes Branch on Route 777 (Fort Lewis Church Road) in Roanoke County will be closed for approximately eight days for a bridge replacement over Stypes Branch. The bridge is located .28 mile south of Route 793 (Artrip Lane) and .2 mile north of Route 828 (Tobey Road).  

From March 21-28, vehicles will not be able to cross the bridge. Residents in the homes affected can park at Glenvar High School and a shuttle bus will pick them up. There will be a pedestrian bridge placed over Stypes Branch to Stypes Branch Road which will remain open during construction. After crossing the pedestrian bridge, a shuttle bus will then take people to their homes.

The shuttles will start running when the road closes Saturday, March 21 at 7 a.m. The buses will run 24 hours a day while the bridge is closed. Residents will call 540-330-5472 to ask for a pickup from the ADA-accessible shuttle buses on each side of the closure.

Cars can be parked at Glenvar High School starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 20. A shuttle will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday to return residents to their homes. Call the shuttle phone number at 540-330-5472 when you have parked your car at Glenvar High School to be picked up by the shuttle.

The bridge work will also require the closure of Tobey Road at the intersection of Fort Lewis Church Road for temporary crane placement and materials storage so an alternate route to Glenvar High School, using West Main Street, is recommended.

Electronic message boards will be in place to alert motorists to the upcoming temporary closure and schedule. People can also call the shuttle bus number to receive construction updates on the bridge replacement progress, and when the bridge will open.
