Route 604 to Close Feb. 13 at Woodstock for Overpass Bridge Repairs

STAUNTON – Part of Route 604 (North Street/Fairview Road) at Woodstock is scheduled to close on Friday, Feb. 13, for repairs to the bridge over Interstate 81. The closure is between Summit Avenue and Route 676 (Fravel Road) until April 30. Signs will direct motorists to use nearby Spring Street as a detour.

Contractors for the Virginia Department of Transportation will repair the Route 604 bridge over I-81 near mile marker 285. A dump truck with a raised bed struck the bridge in September, causing extensive damage to a structural beam.

Looking ahead, motorists also should plan for at least one overnight closure of I-81 southbound in the same area. That closure is tentatively scheduled for early to mid-March, and VDOT will share more details on the I-81 closure in the coming weeks. Traffic impacts from the southbound interstate closure are expected not only in northern Shenandoah, but also in Frederick and Warren counties.

The I-81 southbound closure in March is needed so crews can cut through the bridge deck and railing, then remove and replace the damaged beam. Preliminary work will require occasional overnight single-lane closures on I-81 southbound beginning in mid-February.
