VDOT gears up for mowing season: Safety first for crews and drivers

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is preparing for the upcoming spring mowing season, as part of its ongoing efforts to maintain safe and well-kept roadways across the Bristol District.

BRISTOL – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is preparing for the upcoming spring mowing season, as part of its ongoing efforts to maintain safe and well-kept roadways across the Bristol District.

With more than 7,400 lane miles of interstate, primary, and secondary highways to cover in the Bristol District, VDOT is urging drivers to stay alert and prioritize safety as mowing crews take to the roadsides.

“Mowing season has our crews working along the edge of busy roadways,” said Tabitha Crowder, P.E., Bristol District Engineer. “We’re asking drivers to pay close attention to ‘mowing ahead’ signs, to monitor their speed and give our employees the space they need to do their jobs safely.”

VDOT’s mowing schedule typically includes three cycles: the first in May/June, the second in July/August, and the third from mid-September to late October. However, this schedule may be adjusted based on local needs, population density, or seasonal weather conditions.

VDOT encourages all motorists to stay vigilant as mowing season ramps up, ensuring a safer summer for everyone on Virginia’s highways.
