Winds, rain impacts from Hurricane Helene could impact Southwest Virginia roads

With the significant potential for heavy rains and strong winds overnight and into Saturday in Southwest Virginia, motorists are advised to be alert to rapidly changing conditions along highways.

Bristol, Va. – With the significant potential for heavy rains and strong winds overnight and into Saturday in Southwest Virginia due to remnants from Hurricane Helene, motorists are advised to be alert to rapidly changing conditions along highways.

“With high winds and heavy rains predicted, we cannot stress enough the need to stay informed of the conditions and plan accordingly,” said Bristol District Engineer Tabitha Crowder, P.E. “Our crews will be working with local law enforcement to monitor conditions and respond appropriately to flooded roads and downed trees caused by the storm.”

Preparedness

Drivers should remember “Wipers On – Headlights On”. In Virginia when windshield wipers are on, headlights must be turned on. This helps increase visibility, especially in heavy rain or fog.

Always obey “road closed” signage and should motorists encounter flooded roadways remember the message “turn around, don’t drown.” Never attempt to travel through flooded roadways.

Flooded roads and downed trees can be reported by calling VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (1-800-367-7623).
