Traffic Alert: Interstate 81 lane in Roanoke County could extend through afternoon commute

SALEM — The left lane of northbound Interstate 81 in Roanoke County between mile marker 144 and 146, just north of the Interstate 581 interchange, is currently closed. This lane closure may extend through the afternoon commute, so drivers should consider alternate routes and expect major delays on northbound I-81.

The left northbound lane of I-81 has been closed since last night for a Virginia Department of Transportation contractor to apply a pavement overlay. Unexpected early morning wet weather conditions have extended the curing time of the new overlay and prevented the lane from being reopened.

VDOT and the contractor have been monitoring the overlay throughout the day. Blowers have been brought in to help the overlay dry, but humid conditions continue to slow drying time.

The exact time for reopening the lane has not been established.
