East Stuart Drive in Galax

SALEM – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) invites the public to attend a design public hearing for a project to improve pedestrian safety on a 0.89-mile section of East Stuart Drive (Route 58) in Galax. The section of Route 58 starts at Route 827 (Hanes Road/Taylorwood Road) and extends to 0.33 mile north of Route 722 (Cranberry Road).

The hearing will be held on Tuesday, October 7, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Galax City Council Chambers located at 111 East Grayson Street in Galax. The hearing will be held in an “open-house” format, and VDOT representatives will be present to answer questions.

The project entails constructing 5,000 linear feet of new sidewalk along the shoulder of westbound East Stuart Drive between Route 827 and the Walmart entrance. Pedestrian signals and high visibility crosswalks will be added at East Stuart Drive’s intersections with Route 827 and Route 722. In addition, the project includes closing three commercial property entrances along westbound East Stuart Drive.
