STAUNTON – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the City of Lexington dedicated the North Main Street improvement project on Wednesday, August 27. The recently completed project enhances pedestrian and bicycle access on North Main Street (Route 11 Business) between Massie Street and Hook Lane.

This six-block section of roadway serves as the city's northern gateway, passing through the Virginia Military Institute campus and conveying users to downtown Lexington.

Existing sidewalk on the east side of North Main Street has been widened by five feet to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). On-street parking on the west side of the roadway has been replaced by a four-foot-wide bicycle lane. The project also replaced underground utilities while enhancing multimodal connectivity with the nearby Chessie Trail and Washington & Lee University.

VDOT in November 2024 awarded a $3,024,170 contract to North Construction Inc. of Ashburn, Va., with a contract completion date of August 4, 2025. Additional details about the North Main Street improvements are on the VDOT project page.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) in June 2017 selected this project for full funding through the SMART SCALE prioritization process, which objectively scores transportation projects using several data-driven measures.

The VDOT Staunton District serves Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.

Find the VDOT Staunton District on Facebook and X (Twitter), and follow VDOT statewide social media accounts. The VDOT website is at VDOT.Virginia.gov.

Strategically located at the intersection of I-81 and I-64, the City of Lexington is a center for higher education, serving as home to the Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University. The City of Lexington is also a tourism mecca because of its commitment to historic preservation, vibrant downtown, museums and cultural attractions, convenient access to the Appalachian Trail and other outdoor recreation destinations, and proximity to the Virginia Horse Center.
