STAUNTON (4:45 a.m.) – Interstates and primary roads in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands have significantly improved following the weekend winter storm. Crews are making progress on secondary roads and subdivision streets, but are battling snow and sleet that have iced over from extreme cold overnight.
Residents who can avoid or delay travel can help the Virginia Department of Transportation in its efforts to plow and treat roadways. Vehicles pack down snow and sleet, making it more challenging for snowplows to reach bare pavement.
Those who must travel early Tuesday morning should be extremely cautious due to icy surfaces. Here are the conditions as of 4:45 a.m. Tuesday in the VDOT Staunton District:
Interstate 81 – Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Warren and Frederick counties.
Interstate 64 – Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Augusta counties.
Interstate 66 – Clear conditions in Warren County.
Primary Roads – Minor conditions in Bath, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham and Page counties. Clear conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties.
Secondary Roads – Moderate conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham and Page counties. Minor conditions in Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties.
