Public Meeting Oct. 27 for Vine Street Improvement Alternatives in Harrisonburg

STAUNTON – A public meeting regarding improvement alternatives for Vine Street in the City of Harrisonburg is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 27. The open-house meeting will take place between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Lucy F. Simms Continuing Education Center, 620 Simms Avenue, Harrisonburg, VA 22802. Staff from the city and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will share display boards of the improvement concepts and answer questions.

The meeting and survey are part of a VDOT STARS (Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions) study focusing on a 1.4-mile segment of Vine Street between East Market Street (Route 33) and North Main Street (Route 11.)

The STARS study began in fall 2024 with analysis of traffic data and existing conditions, followed by a public survey in early 2025. The study team evaluated the data and survey input to develop recommendations for strategic short-term and long-term transportation improvements. The recommended alternatives are intended to improve safety and maintain acceptable traffic flow while enhancing access and connectivity for all roadway users including drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.

The STARS study is a collaboration between VDOT, the City of Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, and the Harrisonburg Rockingham Metropolitan Planning Organization (HRMPO).

Final study recommendations will be considered by the City of Harrisonburg for advancement through state transportation funding programs.
