STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
 
INTERSTATE 64
*UPDATE* Mile marker 6 to 9, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder repairs with eastbound left lane closures and westbound right shoulder closures, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. 

PRIMARY ROADS
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs. Mobile traffic control for tractor mowing. Weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
 
SECONDARY ROADS
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for ditch work, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs, pipe replacement and brush cutting. Mobile traffic control for tractor mowing. Weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
 

BATH COUNTY
 
PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 220 (Sam Snead Highway) – Flagger traffic control at various locations between Route 621 (McGuffin Road) and Alleghany County line for tree removal operations, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.   
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for shoulder repairs and pipe cleaning, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting and pipe cleaning, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

 
ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
 
INTERSTATE 64
*UPDATE* Mile marker 44 to 42, westbound – Left lane closures for drainage ditch maintenance, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

INTERSTATE 81
*NEW* Mile marker 175 to 176, northbound – Right shoulder closures for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
*NEW* Mile marker 182 to 181, southbound – Right shoulder closures for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Mile marker 185 to 189, northbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights through September 26.
Mile marker 193 to 190, southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights through August 30. 

PRIMARY ROADS
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting. Mobile lane closures for mowing, 7:30 to 3 p.m. on weekdays.
 
SECONDARY ROADS
Route 665 (Cold Run Drive) – Closed to through traffic between Route 669 (East Whistle Creek) and Route 1501 (Mount Vista Drive) for replacement of bridge over Whistle Creek, through September 5. Follow posted detour.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for grading, pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, pavement patching, shoulder repairs and brush cutting. Mobile lane closures for mowing, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.


HIGHLAND COUNTY
 
PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 220 (Potomac River Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 629 (Strait Creek Road) and Route 627 (Thorny Bottom Lane) for tree trimming operations, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pothole patching, brush cutting and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 600 (Lower Back Creek Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 603 (Valley Center Road) and Route 84 (Mill Gap Road) for tree trimming operations, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday. 
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting, pipe cleaning, tree removal, adding stone to unpaved roads and ditch work, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays. 

 
AUGUSTA COUNTY 
 
INTERSTATE 64
Mile marker 87 to 89, eastbound and westbound – Overnight alternating lane closures including narrowing of Exit 87 off-ramp for pavement treatment, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through September 26. 

INTERSTATE 81
*UPDATE* Mile marker 210 to 213, northbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. 
Mile marker 219 to 224, northbound and southbound – Overnight right lane and shoulder closures including along Exit 221 off-ramp for resurfacing operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through September 26. 
*UPDATE* Mile marker 220 to 221, northbound and southbound – Shoulders closed 24/7 for bridge replacement and roadway construction as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Overnight lane closures as needed during some phases of the project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. Expected completion summer 2025. 
Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Right and left shoulder closures in place 24/7 through spring 2026. Overnight lane closures as needed during some phases of the project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project.
*NEW* Mile marker 223 to 221, southbound – Overnight single lane closures including along Exit 221 off-ramp to I-64 for bridge maintenance, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights and 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday night.  
Mile marker 227 to 229, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for maintenance to bridges over Middle River, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through September 26. 

PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Alternating lane closures between Route 781 (Bald Rock Road/Mill Race Road) and Staunton city limits for milling and paving operations, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
*NEW* Route 42 (Scenic Highway) – Flagger traffic control at various locations between Route 613 (Spring Hill Road/Kyles Mill Road) and Route 607 (Mount Solon Road/Moscow Loop) for tree removal operations, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
*UPDATE* Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) – Overnight flagger traffic control between Route 772 (Sulfur Pump Road) and Route 865 (Rockfish Road) for maintenance to bridge over Middle River, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through August 29.
Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Southbound overnight alternating lane closures between Route 11 (Lee Highway) interchange and I-81 exit 220 interchange including ramp narrowing for pavement resurfacing operations, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through September 26.
Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road) – Northbound right shoulder closure between Foursquare Lane and Route 1315 (Wilson Lane) for commercial entrance construction, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through August 26.
*NEW* Route 340 (East Side Highway) – Overnight flagger and pilot-truck traffic control between Waynesboro city limits and Route 672 (Patrick Mill Lane/Turk Mountain Lane) for pavement treatment, 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. August 21 through August 29 nights. 

SECONDARY ROADS
*UPDATE* Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike) – Flagger traffic control between Route 855 (Mill Creek Lane) and Route 633 (Patton Farm Road) for overhead utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. August 19 through August 29.
Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between South Oak Lane and Chinquapin Drive for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through May 2025. 
Route 635 (Barterbrook Road) – Closed between I-81 frontage roads (FR-217 and FR-218) for bridge replacement as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Follow posted detour. Expected completion summer 2025. 
Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) – Northbound shoulder closures between Route 834 (Hickory Hill Road) and Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road) for commercial entrance construction, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through August 26. 
*UPDATE* Route 664 (Reeds Gap Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 814 (Love Road) and Blue Ridge Parkway for overhead utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through August 29.
Route 664 (Mount Torrey Road) – Occasional flagger traffic control between Route 624 (Lyndhurst Road) and Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike) for utility work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through September 30.
Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between Miami Avenue and Purdue Street for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through June 2025. 
Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. on weekdays. 


ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 
 
INTERSTATE 81
*UPDATE* Mile marker 238 to 240, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for maintenance to North River bridges, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through August 29. 
Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound –. Overnight alternating lane closures as needed, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through December 2026. Overnight slow-roll closures as needed, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Expect delays. 24/7 shoulder closures. Traffic restrictions are related to Route 33 bridge and interchange project.
*UPDATE* Mile marker 255 to 251, southbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. August 19 to September 6.
*UPDATE* Mile marker 244 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight right lane closures including along Exit 247B off-ramp for rock and soil testing, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday nights and 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday nights through September 19. 
*NEW* Mile marker 254 to 251, southbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. August 19 – September 6. 

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 11 (North Valley Pike/Lee Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Northwood Lane and Route 765 (Gravels Road) for curb and gutter installation, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through November 1.
*NEW* Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Westbound overnight left lane closures between Route 655 (Penn Laird Drive) and Route 620 (Cross Keys Road/Indian Trail Road) for turn lane construction, 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights.
Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Westbound alternating lane closures and flagger traffic control at intersections between Business Route 33 (Old Spotswood Trail) and Route 979 (Mt. Hermon Road) for paving operations, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through August 30.
Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) –Overnight alternating eastbound and westbound closures between Vine Street/Hawkins Street and Terri Drive due to bridge work, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. nights through January 2026. Shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 25 miles an hour with automated speed enforcement. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement. 
Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger and pilot-truck traffic control between Dry Run Road and Switzer Lake Road for road widening project, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 30. 
Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 620 (Indian Trail Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) and Route 717 (Mountain Valley Road) for turn lane construction, 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights.
*NEW* Route 646 (Bloomer Springs Road) - Overnight flagger traffic control between Route 602 (Spotswood Trail) and Route 644 (Resort Drive) for paving operations, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday through August 29 nights
Route 726 (Apple Valley Road) – Closed to through traffic between Peach Grove Avenue and Harrisonburg city limits for storm sewer installation, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Friday. Follow posted detour.

*NEW* Route 1801 (Donnagail Drive) – Overnight flagger traffic control between Route 655 (Lawyer Road) and dead end for pavement treatment, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday through August 29 nights.

Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) – Northbound and southbound overnight alternating lane closures for paving operations between Route 663 (Artz Road) and Rockingham County line, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nights through September 29.
*NEW* Route 263 (Orkney Grade) – Shoulder closures near intersection with Route 42 (Senedo Road) for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 

SECONDARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 621 (Cedar Creek Road) – Road closed to through traffic between Route 600 (Zepp Road) and Route 714 (Turkey Run Road) for slope repairs, through Wednesday. Follow posted detour. 


FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81
Mile marker 300 to 301, northbound and southbound – Occasional shoulder closures as needed through December 2024. Southbound work zone speed limit 55 miles an hour. Work is related to southbound acceleration ramp extension and bridge widening. 
Mile marker 310 to 309, southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for maintenance to Opequon Creek bridge maintenance, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through August 29. 
Mile marker 317 to 319, northbound and southbound – Overnight right lane closures as needed for extension of exit 317 northbound entrance ramp and southbound exit ramp, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through night of September 26. Northbound right shoulder closures, 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through August 30. 

PRIMARY ROADS
*UPDATE* Route 37 – Northbound and southbound right lane closures between Route 622 (Cedar Creek Grade) interchange and Route 50 (Northwestern Turnpike/Amherst Street) interchange for inspection of Merrimans Lane overpass bridge, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

SECONDARY ROADS
*UPDATE* Route 627 (Reliance Road) – Shoulder closures just east of I-81 interchange for shoulder widening, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through September 6.
Route 661 (Redbud Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 662 (Milburn Road) and Route 660 (Woods Mill Road) for road maintenance, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through December 31. 
Route 662 (Milburn Road) – Flagger traffic control at various locations between Route 661 (Redbud Road) and Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) for road maintenance, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through December 31. 
Route 842 (South Buckton Road) – Shoulder closures just south of Route 627 (Reliance Road) for utility work, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through September 27.


CLARKE COUNTY
 
PRIMARY ROADS
Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound right lane closures between Route 612 (Quarry Road) and Route 603 (Castleman Road) for turn lane construction, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through September 26.
Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures between Route 606 (River Road) and Route 601 (Blueridge Mountain Road) for safety enhancement project. Eastbound lane closures 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. weekdays. Westbound lane closures between 8 p.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays or weeknights. Estimated completion October 31.

WARREN COUNTY 
 
INTERSTATE 66
Mile marker 0 to 13, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder closures including along Exit 6 off-ramp for utility work, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. through September 30. 
Mile marker 7 to 15, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures for utility work, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through September 30.

INTERSTATE 81
*NEW* Mile marker 299 to 300, northbound – Right shoulder closures for utility work, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to Friday.
Mile marker 299 to 300, northbound and southbound – Occasional shoulder closures as needed through December 2024. Southbound work zone speed limit 55 miles an hour. Work is related to southbound acceleration ramp extension and bridge widening. 

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) – Southbound right shoulder closures of on-ramp to westbound I-66 for utility work, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through September 30.

SECONDARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 624 (Morgan Ford Road) – Daytime closures between Route 643 (Howellsville Road) and Route 661 (Fairground Road) for debris cleanup, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) for construction of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Estimated completion December 2025.


Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. VDOT reminds motorists to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
