Staunton District Traffic Alert for July 14 – 18, 2025

Route 671 Bridge Replacement, Clarke/Frederick County Line

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 21 to 18, westbound – Alternating lane closures for pavement resurfacing, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Saturday (July 19).

*NEW* Mile marker 27 to 29, eastbound and westbound – Alternating lane closures for bridge inspection, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

PRIMARY ROADS

*UPDATE* Route 42 (Forty Two Road) – Overnight closures near Route 636 (Morgan Drive) for maintenance to bridge over railway, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday to Thursday nights through July 24. Detour in place. At other times, temporary traffic signals in operation and wide-load tractor trailers are prohibited. Estimated project completion September 1.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Route 11 Business (North Main Street, Lexington) – Flagger traffic control between Massie Street and Hook Lane for utility work, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic restrictions are for pedestrian-access improvement project with scheduled completion in August 2025.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 220 to 222, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for barrier wall removal and guardrail installation, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of July 31. Shoulder closures in both directions 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Expected completion in late summer 2025. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.
*UPDATE* Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures northbound for bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday nights. Mile marker 226 to 230, northbound and southbound – Overnight single-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and daytime shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for bridge painting. Estimated completion August 31.

Route 635 (Mount Vernon Road) – Overnight flagger traffic control between Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) and Route 639 (Wayne Avenue) for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through night of July 30.

*NEW* Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 631 (Ladd Road) and Waynesboro city limits for paving and pavement marking operations, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday.

Route 775 (Buttermilk Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 11 (Lee Highway) and Route 773 (Westview School Road) for rock and soil testing, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 237 to 238, northbound and southbound – Left lane closures for installation of equipment access points, 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday nights. Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.

*NEW* Mile marker 239 to 240, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for utility work, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday night.

Exit 240, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures along ramps to and from Route 257 for construction of additional turn lanes, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through August 1.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for removal of Route 33 bridge, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Slow roll operations as needed, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.  Shoulder closures in place 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge and interchange project with completion expected in fall 2026.

Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Westbound right lane closure between Route 842 (Mountain Grove Road) and Route 276 (Cross Keys Road) for utility installations, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday.
Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger traffic control between Laurel Woods Lane and Switzer Lake Road/Skidmore Fork for paving, line-painting and guardrail work related to road widening and curve improvements, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through August 1.
Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Single-lane traffic between MLK Jr. Way and I-81 interchange. Two lanes in each direction between I-81 interchange and Linda Lane/Burgess Road. Be alert for travel-lane shifts. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement with expected completion in September 2026.
*NEW* Route 42 (Warm Springs Pike) – Flagger traffic control between Route 727 (Spring Creek Road) and Bridgewater town limits for inspection of bridge over North River, 8 a.m. to 12 noon Wednesday.

Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 722 (Armentrout Path) and Route 811 (Fridleys Gap Road) for replacement of bridge over Mountain Run, through September 11. Follow posted detour.

Route 644 (Resort Drive) – Closed between Silverstone Lane and Woodstone Drive for paving operations and turn-lane construction, through about October 31. Follow posted detour.

Route 717 (Indian Trail Road) – Mobile lane closures between Route 724 (Flook Lane) and Route 721 (Fellowship Road) for tree trimming operations, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through July 24.

Route 724 (Melrose Road) – Mobile lane closures between Route 725 (Etna Road) and Route 11 (North Valley Pike) for tree trimming operations, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through July 24.

Mile marker 302 to 300, southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for pavement and guardrail work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday night. Daytime shoulder closures for sign installations, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Friday. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 widening project.

*NEW* Mile marker 307 to 319, northbound and southbound – Slow rolls Sunday morning (July 13) beginning at 5 a.m. and lasting about one hour for installation of overhead utility line. Temporary closures of northbound on-ramps from exits 307, 310 and 313, and southbound on-ramps from exits 317, 315 and 313.

*NEW* Mile marker 317 to 319, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for bridge maintenance, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

*NEW* Route 7 (Berryville Pike) – Westbound overnight right lane closures between Route 656 (First Woods Road) and Route 660 (Woods Mill Road) for tree removal operations, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Route 7 (Berryville Pike) – Westbound overnight right lane closures between Route 659 (Burnt Factory Road) and Route 660 (Woods Mill Road) for roadway testing, 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Friday night (July 11).

Route 7 (Berryville Pike) – Eastbound right lane closures between Route 656 (Greenwood Road) and Route 659 (Valley Mill Road) for utility work, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.

Route 17/50 (Millwood Pike) – Eastbound and westbound overnight alternating lane closures between Route 522 (Front Royal Pike) and Route 796 (Purdue Drive) for pavement marking, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday night.

Route 17/50 (Millwood Pike) – Eastbound overnight right lane closures near I-81 interchange for road testing, 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Friday night (July 11).

Route 522 (North Frederick Pike) – Southbound overnight right lane closures between Route 697 (Morgan Road) and Route 654 (Cedar Grove Road/Marple Road) for utility work, 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Friday night (July 11).

Route 522 (North Frederick Pike) – Northbound overnight alternating lane closures between Route 739 (Fox Drive) and Route 673 (Golds Hill Road) for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday night.

SECONDARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 627 (Reliance Road) – Flagger traffic control near I-81 interchange for guardrail upgrades, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.

*NEW* Route 649 (Springdale Road) – Closing Friday (July 18) to through traffic between Route 11 (Valley Pike) and Route 651 (Shady Elm Road). Will have dead end on both sides of the rail line. Through traffic will use new Route 873 (Renaissance Drive).

*NEW* Route 651 (Mt. Olive Road) – Flagger traffic control near I-81 interchange for guardrail upgrades, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Clarke County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour.

 

CLARKE COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound and westbound overnight right lane closures at various locations between Frederick County line and Loudon County line for roadway testing, 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Friday night (July 11).

Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Westbound overnight alternating lane closures between Route 601 (Blueridge Mountain Road) and Route 612 (Shepherds Mill Road) for shoulder repaving, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday night.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Frederick County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour.

WARREN COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66

*NEW* Mile marker 0 to 15, eastbound – Overnight single lane closures for maintenance to various bridges, 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. through night of July 31.

Mile marker 2 to 0, westbound – Shoulder closures for road work related to I-81 southbound widening, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Friday.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 299 to 300, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday night. Daytime shoulder closures for sign installations, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Friday. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 widening project.

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Page County line and Route 674 (Limeton Church Road) for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nights July 13 through September 5.

Route 340 (Winchester Road) – Northbound and southbound single-lane closures between Route 637 (Guard Hill Road) and Route 655 (Country Club Road) for painting of Crooked Run bridge and the I-66 bridge over 340, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday (July 20).

SECONDARY ROADS

*UPDATE* Route 610 (Bucks Mill Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 55 (Strasburg Road) and Route 626 (Andrews Road) for bridge repairs, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through August 15.

*NEW* Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road) – Flagger traffic control near Route 603 (Oregon Hollow Road) intersection for painting I-66 overpass bridge, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 16 – 31.

*NEW* Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road) – Flagger traffic control near FR-Route 285 (Gap Road) intersection for painting I-66 overpass bridge, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 16 – August 31.

*UPDATE* Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Open to through traffic between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) using new bridge over railway. Lane or shoulder closures as needed through September 2025.
