STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
 
INTERSTATE 64
*NEW* Mile marker 27 to 29, eastbound and westbound – Mobile shoulder closures for inspection of railway bridge, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

PRIMARY ROADS
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs. Mobile traffic control for tractor mowing. Weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
 
SECONDARY ROADS
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for ditch work, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs, pipe replacement and brush cutting. Mobile traffic control for tractor mowing. Weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 252 (Brownsville Turnpike) – Single travel lane with stop-and-proceed traffic pattern between Route 725 (High Rock Road) and Route 726 (New Providence Road) for replacement of Moffatts Creek bridge, through 5 p.m. July 25.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting. Mobile lane closures for mowing, 7:30 to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

Route 663 (River Road) – Flagger traffic control near Route 501 (Glasgow Highway) intersection for paving operations, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Friday.
*NEW* Route 716 (Mount Atlas Road/Timber Ridge Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 39 (Maury River Road) and Route 608 (South River Road) for paving operations, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 15 – 26.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for grading, pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, pavement patching, shoulder repairs and brush cutting. Mobile lane closures for mowing, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.


HIGHLAND COUNTY
 
PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 250 (Mountain Turnpike) – Brief closures with flagger traffic control for overhead utility work between Route 652 (Academy Hill Road) and Route 637 (Dug Bank Road/Maple Sugar Road), 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.   
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pothole patching, brush cutting and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS
Various roads – Flagger traffic control on various parts of Route 600 (Lower Back Creek Road), Route 634 (Halterman Hollow Lane), and Route 636 (Spruce Street) for paving operations, 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. through Friday.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting, pipe cleaning, tree removal, adding stone to unpaved roads and ditch work, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays. 

 
AUGUSTA COUNTY
 
INTERSTATE 64
No lane closures reported.

INTERSTATE 81
Mile marker 205 to 211, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for pavement resurfacing, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through August 15. 
*UPDATE* Mile marker 206 to 210, northbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. 
Mile marker 214 to 210, southbound – Alternating lane closures for milling and paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through July 25. Exit 213 traffic will be detoured during ramp paving.
Mile marker 220 to 221, northbound and southbound – Shoulders closed 24/7 for bridge replacement and roadway construction as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. Expected completion summer 2025. 
*UPDATE* Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures for installation of temporary concrete barriers, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights. Right and left shoulder closures in place 24/7 through spring 2026. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. 
*NEW* Mile marker 223 to 221, southbound – Right shoulder closures for litter pickup, 12 noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday.
*NEW* Mile Marker 234 to 237, northbound and southbound – Overnight single-lane closures for inspection of Route 256 overpass bridge, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday night. 

PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Eastbound and westbound overnight alternating lane closures between Staunton city limits and Route 792 (Brand Station Road/Sangers Lane) for installation of temporary concrete barrier, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between South Oak Lane and Chinquapin Drive for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through May 2025. 
Route 635 (Barterbrook Road) – Closed between I-81 frontage roads (FR-217 and FR-218) for bridge replacement as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Follow posted detour. Expected completion summer 2025. 
Route 664 (Mount Torrey Road) – Occasional flagger traffic control between Route 624 (Lyndhurst Road) and Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike) for utility work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through September 30.
Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between Miami Avenue and Purdue Street for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through June 2025. 
Route 682 (McKinley Road) – Occasional flagger traffic control between Route 252 (Middlebrook Road) and Route 679 (Campbells Hollow Road) for utility pole installation, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through July 25.
Route 865 (Rockfish Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 612 (New Hope-Crimora Road) and Route 619 (Hildebrand Church Road) for installation of box culvert, through July 25. Follow posted detour.
Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. on weekdays. 


ROCKINGHAM COUNTY
 
INTERSTATE 81
*UPDATE* Mile marker 238 to 240, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for maintenance to Route 867 overpass bridge, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through August 1. 
*NEW* Exit 247B, southbound – Off-ramp to westbound Route 33 (Market Street) closed beginning 10 p.m. Sunday night (July 21) through morning of Friday (July 26) for ramp reconstruction. Follow posted detour. Traffic restrictions are related to Route 33 bridge and interchange project. 
Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures as needed, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through December 2026. Overnight slow-roll closures as needed, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Expect delays. 24/7 shoulder closures. Traffic restrictions are related to Route 33 bridge and interchange project. 
*NEW* Mile marker 244 to 246, northbound – Overnight right lane closures for rock and soil testing, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday nights and 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday nights (July 21 – August 15).
Mile marker 245 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight mobile lane closures for inspection of Route 331 bridge, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday night (July 14).
*NEW*Mile marker 249 to 253, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures including along Exit 251 off-ramp for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 
Mile marker 257 to 254, southbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Thursday. 

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) –Overnight alternating eastbound and westbound closures between Vine Street/Hawkins Street and Terri Drive due to bridge work, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. nights through January 2026. Shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 25 miles an hour with automated speed enforcement. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement. 
Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger and pilot-truck traffic control between Dry Run Road and Switzer Lake Road for road widening project, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 30. 
*NEW* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 1604 (Tiger Camp Road) and Route 655 (Lawyer Road) for inspection of bridge over North River, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 620 (Indian Trail Road) – Shoulder closures near Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) intersection for turn-lane construction, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 17 – 26.
Route 659 (Port Republic Road) – Mobile lane closures between Route 340 (East Side Highway) and Route 1610 (Terrace Run) for paving operations, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Saturday (July 20).
Route 726 (Apple Valley Road) – Closed to through traffic between Peach Grove Avenue and Harrisonburg city limits for storm sewer installation, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Friday. Follow posted detour.

*NEW*Mile marker 282 to 285, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures including along Exit 283 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 
Mile marker 287 to 289, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for maintenance to Route 600 and Route 625 bridges, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nights through August 8. 
*NEW*Exit 291, northbound – Off-ramp narrows during overnight hours for rock and soil testing, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday (July 21) night.

Route 635 (Bowman Mill Road) – Occasional flagger traffic control between Route 634 (Pouts Hill Road) and Warren County line for utility pole installation, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Thursday.
*NEW* Route 675 (Stoney Creek Road), westbound – Right shoulder closures near Route 808 (Corner Road) intersection for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.


FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81
*UPDATE* Mile marker 300 to 301, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures as needed through December 2024.  Southbound work zone speed limit 55 miles an hour. Work is related to southbound acceleration ramp extension and bridge widening. 
Mile marker 317 to 319, northbound and southbound – Overnight right lane closures as needed for extension of exit 317 northbound entrance ramp and southbound exit ramp, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through night of September 27. 

PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 7 (Berryville Pike) – Westbound right lane closures between Rout 991 (Regency Lakes Drive) and Route 1220 (Denny Lane) for ditching operations, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
Route 50 (Northwestern Pike) – Eastbound and westbound alternating lane closures between Route 688 (Stony Hill Road) and Route 614 (Back Mountain Road) for ditching operations, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday.
Route 277 (Fairfax Pike) – Overnight single-lane closures with flagger traffic control between I-81 ramps for maintenance bridge over interstate, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through Thursday.

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 600 (Back Mountain Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 613 (Bowman Lane) and Route 612 (Fishel Road) for utility work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through July 26.
Route 627 (Reliance Road) – Shoulder closures just east of I-81 interchange for shoulder widening, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday.
Route 661 (Redbud Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 662 (Milburn Road) and Route 660 (Woods Mill Road) for road maintenance, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through December 31. 
Route 662 (Milburn Road) – Permanently closed beginning June 17 between Route 883 (Snowden Bridge Boulevard) and just south of Route 838 (McCanns Road) to allow for future extension of Snowden Bridge Boulevard.
Route 662 (Milburn Road) – Flagger traffic control at various locations between Route 661 (Redbud Road) and Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) for road maintenance, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through December 31. 
Route 842 (South Buckton Road) – Shoulder closures just south of Route 627 (Reliance Road) for utility work, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through September 27.
*NEW* Route 1000 (Independence Drive) – Flagger traffic control near Route 728 (Victory Lane) intersection for utility work, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.


CLARKE COUNTY
 
PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound left lane closures between Quarry Road and Route 603 (Castleman Road) for turn lane construction, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 15 – August 15.
Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures between Route 606 (River Road) and Route 601 (Blueridge Mountain Road) for shoulder widening and rumble strip installation. Eastbound lane closures 9: a.m. to 8:30 p.m. weekdays. Westbound lane closures between 8 p.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays or weeknights. Estimated completion October 31.

WARREN COUNTY 
 
INTERSTATE 66

Mile marker 10 to 12, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder closures for sign installations, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 

INTERSTATE 81
Mile marker 299 to 300, northbound – Right shoulder closures for utility work, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. through July 31.
*UPDATE* Mile marker 299 to 300, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures as needed through December 2024. Southbound work zone speed limit 55 miles an hour. Work is related to southbound acceleration ramp extension and bridge widening. 

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) – Northbound and southbound single lane closures between Route 661 (Fairground Road) and Crooked Run Boulevard for sign installation, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Monday.

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) for construction of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Estimated completion December 2025.

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. VDOT reminds motorists to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
