Staunton District Traffic Alert for July 28 – August 1, 2025

Roadside mowing operations

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

*NEW* Mile marker 0 to 25, eastbound and westbound – Mobile right shoulder closures for debris pick-up, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday.

*NEW* Mile marker 16 to 17, eastbound and westbound – Left lane and right shoulder closures for drainage work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

*NEW* Mile marker 29 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Mobile right shoulder closures for debris pick-up, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Wednesday.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 42 (Forty Two Road) – Overnight closures near Route 636 (Morgan Drive) for maintenance to bridge over railway, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday to Thursday nights through mid-August. Detour in place. At other times, temporary traffic signals in operation and wide-load tractor trailers are prohibited. Estimated project completion mid-September.

*NEW* Route 60 (Madison Street) – Overnight mobile lane closures between I-64 interchange and Route 18 (Carpenter Drive, Covington) for signal inspections, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday and Tuesday nights.

*NEW* Route 154 (Durant Road) – Overnight mobile lane closures in the area of the I-64 interchange for signal inspections, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday night.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 648 (Horse Mountain View) – Overnight mobile lane closures between I-64 interchange and Route 647 (Interstate Drive) for signal inspections, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday night.

*NEW* Route 696 (Low Moor Road) – Overnight mobile lane closures between Route 1101 (Winterberry Avenue) and Route 1314 (Westvaco Road) for signal inspections, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday night.

*NEW* Route 1104 (Valley Ridge Road) – Overnight mobile lane closures between Route 1109 (Heatherton Drive) and Route 60 (Madison Street) for signal inspections, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Tuesday night.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for ditch work, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs, pipe replacement and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

BATH COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 39 (Mountain Valley Road) – Single travel lane with stop-and-proceed traffic pattern between Route 640 (Mill Creek Road) and Route 643 (Campbell Hollow Road) for culvert repairs. Estimated completion July 29.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for shoulder repairs and pipe cleaning, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

INTERSTATE 64

*NEW* Mile marker 41 to 56, eastbound and westbound – Mobile right shoulder closures for debris removal, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondy and Tuesday.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 191 to 197, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday to Thursday nights through September 4.

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Overnight mobile lane closures between Route 671 (Old Farm Road) and the Lexington city limits for signal inspections, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday night.

Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Route 609 (Red Mill Road) and Route 737 (Dog Town Loop) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 1.

Route 11 Business (North Main Street, Lexington) – Flagger traffic control between Massie Street and Hook Lane for roadway and utility work, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Overnight lane closures as needed. Traffic restrictions are for pedestrian-access improvement project with scheduled completion in late August 2025.

*NEW* Route 60 (Midland Trail) – Overnight mobile lane closures between Route 608 (Forge Road) and the Lexington city limits for signal inspections, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday night.

Route 501 (Magnolia Avenue, Buena Vista) – Flagger and pilot truck traffic control between Second Street and 15^th Street/Sycamore Avenue for paving operations, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday through July 31.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 604 (Gibbs Run Road) – Closed August 4 to September 4 between Route 720 (Spring Run Lane) and Augusta County line for replacement of bridge over Poor Creek tributary. Follow posted detour.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for grading, pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, pavement patching, shoulder repairs and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 220 (Lee Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Route 611 (Riverview Lane) and Bath County line for milling and paving, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 28 through September 1.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pothole patching, brush cutting and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting, pipe cleaning, tree removal, adding stone to unpaved roads and ditch work, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

*UPDATE* Mile marker 88 to 90, eastbound – Possible left shoulder closures for tree removal operations, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 8.

Exit 94, eastbound – Right shoulder closure along off-ramp for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

INTERSTATE 81
*UPDATE* Mile marker 205 to 234, northbound and southbound – Possible shoulder closures for tree removal operations, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 8.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 220 to 222, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for barrier wall removal, bridge painting and guardrail installation, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of September 1. Shoulder closures in both directions 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.

Southbound I-81 ramp to I-64 eastbound at exit 221 limited to single lane through November 2025. Northbound and southbound shoulder closures 24/7 through spring 2026. Mile marker 226 to 230, northbound and southbound – Overnight single-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and daytime shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for bridge painting. Estimated completion August 31.

*NEW* Mile marker 227 to 229, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge inspection, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday (July 27) night and 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday night.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 228 to 232, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Mile marker 232 to 237, northbound and southbound – Slow rolls (rolling roadblocks) between 6:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Sunday (July 27) for installation of overhead utility lines. State police will assist with traffic control.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 234 to 237, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures for bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on the nights of August 3-8. Weekend hours vary. Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 237 to 238, northbound and southbound –Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.

*NEW* Mile marker 238 to 240, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for North River bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through September 12.

Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for removal of Route 33 bridge, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Slow roll operations as needed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.  Right turns only from northbound I-81 off-ramp onto eastbound Route 33 through mid-August. Shoulder closures in place 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge and interchange project with completion expected in fall 2026.

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Periodic traffic stoppages between Route 654 (Montevideo Circle) and Route 842 (Mountain Grove Road) for installation of overhead utility lines between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday. State police will assist with traffic control.

*NEW* Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Eastbound and westbound right shoulder closures just west of Route 276/620 (Cross Keys Road/Indian Trail Road) intersection for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger traffic control as needed between Laurel Woods Lane and Switzer Lake Road/Skidmore Fork for paving, line-painting and guardrail work related to road widening and curve improvements, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through August 1.
Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Single-lane traffic as needed between MLK Jr. Way and Linda Lane/Burgess Road. Be alert for travel-lane shifts. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement with expected completion in September 2026.
*NEW* Route 42 (John Wayland Highway) – Southbound right shoulder closures just north of Route 732 (Eberly Road) for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 750 (Nazarene Church Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 613 (Spring Creek Road) and Route 755 (Windy Cove Road) for pipe replacement. Follow posted detour.

*NEW* Route 50/17 (Millwood Pike) – Eastbound single-lane closures between Route 796 (Purdue Drive) and Clarke County line paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through night of August 15.

Route 522 (North Frederick Pike) – Northbound overnight lane closures between Route 739 (Fox Drive) and Route 673 (Golds Hill Road) for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday night.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 627 (Reliance Road) – Flagger traffic control just east of Route 11 (Valley Pike) for turn-lane construction, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. through September 26.

Route 649 (Springdale Road) – Close to through traffic between Route 11 (Valley Pike) and Route 651 (Shady Elm Road). Road has dead-end on both sides of the rail line. Through traffic uses new Route 873 (Renaissance Drive).

Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Clarke County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour.

 

CLARKE COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Single lane closures between Route 653 (Kimble Road) and Frederick County line for paving operations, eastbound from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and westbound from 8 p.m. to 12 noon. Estimated completion August 1.

Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound and westbound overnight single lane closures between Route 601 (Blueridge Mountain Road) and Route 612 (Shepherds Mill Road) for shoulder repaving, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday night.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Frederick County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour.

 

WARREN COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66

*NEW* Mile marker 0 to 15, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Mile marker 0 to 15, eastbound – Overnight single lane closures for maintenance to various bridges, 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. through night of July 31.

Mile marker 2 to 0, westbound – Shoulder closures for road work related to I-81 southbound widening, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through August 8.

*NEW* Mile marker 4 to 9, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures including along Exit 6 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 299 to 300, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for installation of median barriers and construction entrances, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through the night of August 7. Daytime shoulder closures for sign installations, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through August 8. Left shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 widening project.

Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Page County line and Route 674 (Limeton Church Road) for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nights through September 5.

Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) – Northbound and southbound single-lane closures between Route 637 (Guard Hill Road) and Route 655 (Country Club Road) for painting of Crooked Run bridge and the I-66 bridge over 340, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday (July 27).

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 610 (Bucks Mill Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 55 (Strasburg Road) and Route 626 (Andrews Road) for bridge repairs. Estimated completion August 15.

*NEW* Route 619 (Rivermont Drive) – Southbound right shoulder closures near Route 618 (Lee Burke Road) intersection for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road) – Flagger traffic control near intersections with Route 603 (Oregon Hollow Road) and FR-285 (Gap Road) for painting of I-66 overpass bridge, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 31.

Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Lane or shoulder closures as needed between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) during final stages of bridge and roadway work. Estimated completion September 2025.

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. VDOT reminds motorists to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
