New exit numbers coming to Big Stone Gap, Norton

Exit numbers will relate to mileage on Route 23

BRISTOL – New exit signs are coming soon for Route 23 at Big Stone Gap and Norton, and motorists will see changes to the exit numbers.

The current signs for the two exits in Big Stone Gap and Norton are numbered as exits 1 and 2.

The new signs will correlate with the mileage along Route 23, renumbering the Big Stone Gap exits as 33 and 35, and the Norton exits as 42 and 44.

Relating the exit signs to the mileage will be of benefit to motorists.

“Smaller mileage signs were added to Route 23 about 15 years ago and are a useful tool when emergency response teams respond to crashes or when a motorist with car trouble needs to be located for assistance,” Bristol District Traffic Operations Engineer Brian Holt, P.E., said. “The exit signs correlating with the route’s mileage will be clearer and more consistent for motorists.”

The signs are expected to be installed by mid-March (weather permitting). Pay close attention to workers and slow down when a highway crew is present.
