Construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor begins Aug. 21

STAUNTON — A new roadway designed to help improve access and traffic flow in the city of Waynesboro is scheduled to begin construction on Monday, Aug. 21. The Waynesboro Southern Corridor is a 1.6-mile two-lane road with a shared-use path, running roughly parallel to Interstate 64 between exit 94 (Rosser Avenue) and exit 96 (South Delphine Avenue).

The new corridor extends Shenandoah Village Drive along the northern edge of Coyner Springs Park and intersects with Lyndhurst Road across from North Oak Lane. It then follows the existing North Oak Lane over the South River, continues on a new location through the city’s industrial park, Nature’s Crossing Technology Center. The roadway ends at a new intersection with South Delphine Avenue.

Construction is expected to take about two years to complete. Much of the Waynesboro Southern Corridor is being built on a new alignment. During some phases of the project, shoulder closures or flagger traffic control will be required on North Oak Lane, Lyndhurst Road and South Delphine Avenue. The Virginia Department of Transportation will share details of those traffic restrictions as they become available.

The Waynesboro Southern Corridor is designed to improve traffic flow at I-64 exit 94 and exit 96 while improving access to numerous industrial, commercial and residential properties in the southern portion of Waynesboro. It will serve as the primary access road for Nature’s Crossing Technology Center.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) in June 2016 selected the Waynesboro Southern Corridor for full funding through the SMART SCALE prioritization process, which objectively scores transportation projects using several data-driven measures.

On June 28, 2023, the CTB awarded a $9,985,000 construction contract to Branch Civil Inc. of Roanoke, Va.  The project has a contract completion date of September 22, 2025. All work is weather permitting.
