STAUNTON — Construction work for a pedestrian-access improvement project is scheduled to begin on or about Monday, March 3, along North Main Street (Route 11) in the city of Lexington. New sidewalk and bicycle lanes will permanently replace on-street parking along a 0.7-mile portion of North Main Street between Massie Street and Hook Lane.

The elimination of on-street parking will coincide with the start of construction. Temporary traffic restrictions include flagger traffic control for motorists and 24/7 sidewalk closures to help ensure pedestrian safety during construction.

The North Main Street project will provide about 2,000 feet of new sidewalk, which will tie into existing sidewalk along the eastern side of the roadway. Four-foot-wide bicycle lanes will run in both directions along the entire length of the project. Construction will begin with underground utility work and finish with milling, paving and restriping.

The Virginia Department of Transportation in November 2024 awarded a $3,024,170 contract to North Construction Inc. of Ashburn, Virginia. Completion is scheduled for August 2025. Construction and traffic updates will be posted on the VDOT project page.
