I-81 Overnight Lane Closures in Frederick County for Cable-Barrier Installation

Interstate 81

I-81 Traffic Alert
I-81 Traffic Alert

STAUNTON – A safety enhancement project on Interstate 81 in Frederick County is scheduled to begin Monday, August 25, and continue through the end of 2025. The $3.1 million project installs high-tension cable barrier at various locations between the northbound and southbound lanes along a 20-mile stretch of the interstate. This will help prevent collisions due to vehicles running off the roadway and crossing the median into oncoming traffic.

I-81 motorists should be alert for left lane closures during nighttime and overnight hours at various locations between mile marker 304.9 (just north of truck weigh stations) and 324.9 (West Virginia state line). Contractors plan to begin on northbound I-81, then move to the southbound side. Work hours are as follows:

  • Monday through Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • Friday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m.
  • Sunday nights from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

All work is weather permitting.
