STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
 
INTERSTATE 64
No lane closures reported.

PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 18 (Potts Creek Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 613 (Bens Run Road) and Route 694 (Old Mill Road) for inspection of bridge over Potts Creek, 8 a.m. to 12 noon Monday.
*UPDATE* Route 42 (Forty Two Road) – Overnight closures near Route 636 (Morgan Drive) for maintenance to bridge over railway, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday to Thursday nights through mid-September. Detour in place. At other times, temporary traffic signals in operation and wide-load tractor trailers are prohibited. Estimated project completion mid-September.
*NEW* Route 269 (Longdale Furnace Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 633 (Sharon Lane/Sharon School Circle) and Route 723 (Circle H Lane) for inspection of bridge over Cowpasture River, 12 noon to 4 p.m. Monday.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for ditch work, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs, pipe replacement and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
 

BATH COUNTY
 
PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 39 (Mountain Valley Road) – Flagger traffic control between Dinwiddie Trail and Meadow Lane Trail for inspection of bridge over Jackson River, 8 a.m. to 12 noon Wednesday.
*NEW* Route 39 (Mountain Valley Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 690 (Windy Cove Road) and Peaceful River Road for inspection of bridge over Cowpasture River, 12 noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday.
*NEW* Route 39 (Mountain Valley Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 42 (Cowpasture River Highway) and Route 678 (Indian Draft Road) for inspection of bridge over Stuart Run, 8 a.m. to 12 noon Tuesday. 
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for shoulder repairs and pipe cleaning, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY
 
INTERSTATE 64
*NEW* Mile marker 44 to 49, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. 

INTERSTATE 81
Mile marker 188 to 197, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday to Thursday nights through September 4. 
Mile marker 200 to 205, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures for environmental survey work, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Route 609 (Red Mill Road) and Route 737 (Dog Town Loop) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 29.
*UPDATE* Route 39 (Maury River Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 11 (North Lee Highway) and Route 252 (Brownsburg Turnpike) for ditch cleaning operations, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday. 
*NEW* Route 130 (Rockbridge Road) – Flagger traffic control between 8th Street (town of Glasgow) and Route 501 (Glasgow Highway) for fiber installation, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through August 31. 
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 604 (Gibbs Run Road) – Closed August 4 to September 4 between Route 720 (Spring Run Lane) and Augusta County line for replacement of bridge over Poor Creek tributary. Follow posted detour.
*NEW* Route 608 (Forge Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 680 (Falling Spring Road) and Route 679 (Lone Jack Road) for fiber installation, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through August 31.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for grading, pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, pavement patching, shoulder repairs and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.


HIGHLAND COUNTY
 
PRIMARY ROADS
Route 220 (Lee Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Route 611 (Riverview Lane) and Bath County line for milling and paving, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. through September 1.  
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pothole patching, brush cutting and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting, pipe cleaning, tree removal, adding stone to unpaved roads and ditch work, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 
AUGUSTA COUNTY 
 
INTERSTATE 64
*NEW* Mile marker 97 to 87, westbound – Overnight single lane closures for pavement marking, 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights (August 8-9).

INTERSTATE 81
Mile marker 218 to 221, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on nights through October 16.
*NEW* Mile marker 220 to 223, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures at various locations for bridge inspections, 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday night (August 17).
*UPDATE* Mile marker 220 to 222, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving, barrier wall removal, and guardrail installation, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of September 1. Shoulder closures in both directions 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. 
Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Single-lane traffic on southbound I-81 ramp to I-64 eastbound at exit 221 through November 2025. Northbound and southbound shoulder closures 24/7 through spring 2026. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.
Mile marker 226 to 230, northbound and southbound – Overnight single-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and daytime shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for bridge painting. Estimated completion August 31. 
Mile marker 234 to 237, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures for bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Friday night. Weekend work hours vary. Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes. 
*UPDATE* Mile marker 235 to 237, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge maintenance, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday night.

PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Northbound and southbound single lane closures between Route 781 (Bald Rock Road/Mill Race Road) and Route 1930 (Rolla Mill Road) for painting of bridge over Middle River, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through September 30.
Route 250 (Broad Street, Waynesboro) – Eastbound and westbound overnight single mobile lane closures between Route 340 (Rosser Avenue) and East Main Street for pothole patching, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday night.
*NEW* Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 772 (Sulfur Pump Road) and Route 865 (Rockfish Road) for painting of bridge over Middle River, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through September 30.
*NEW* Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Eastbound and westbound left shoulder closures between I-81 interchange and Route 11 (Lee Highway) interchange for utility work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

SECONDARY ROADS
Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays.


ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 
 
INTERSTATE 81
Mile marker 237 to 238, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.  *UPDATE* Mile marker 238 to 240, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for North River bridges maintenance, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through August 28. 
Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures as needed for removal of Route 33 bridge, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Slow roll operations as needed, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Right turns only from northbound I-81 off-ramp onto eastbound Route 33 through mid-August. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge and interchange project with completion expected in fall 2026. 
*NEW* Mile marker 243 to 244, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge inspections, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday and Tuesday nights. 
*NEW* Mile marker 251 to 252, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge inspection, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday night.
*UPDATE* Mile marker 261 to 264, northbound – Overnight left shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Thursday night. Daytime right shoulder closures, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. 

PRIMARY ROADS
*UPDATE* Route 11 (Valley Pike) – Northbound and southbound overnight single lane closures between I-81 interchange and Route 963 (Windy Knoll Drive) for utility work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.
Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Eastbound single lane closures between Shenandoah River South Fork bridges and Route 634 (Sapling Ridge Road) for milling and paving operations, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Friday.
Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Single-lane traffic as needed between MLK Jr. Way and Linda Lane/Burgess Road. Be alert for travel-lane shifts. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement with expected completion in September 2026. 
Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 722 (Armentrout Path) and Route 811 (Fridleys Gap Road) for replacement of bridge over Mountain Run, through September 11. Follow posted detour. 
Route 644 (Resort Drive) – Closed between Silverstone Lane and Woodstone Drive for paving operations and turn-lane construction, through about October 31. Follow posted detour.
*UPDATE* Route 750 (Nazarene Church Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 613 (Spring Creek Road) and Route 755 (Windy Cove Road) for pipe replacement. Follow posted detour. Estimated completion August 20.

PRIMARY ROADS

INTERSTATE 81

*NEW* Mile marker 289 to 287, southbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge maintenance, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday nights. 
*UPDATE* Mile marker 294 to 299, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for grading and bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through the night of September 4. Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 widening project. 

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) – Single lane closures between Route 650 (Tea Berry Road) and Route 657 (Zion Church Road) for tree removal operations, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Thursday.
Route 11 (Old Valley Pike/North Massanutten Street) – Overnight flagger traffic control between Route 601 (Battlefield Road) and Warren County line for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through night of August 29. 
Route 211 (Old Cross Road) – Westbound left lane closures near I-81 interchange for bridge maintenance, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 29.

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 720 (Wissler Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 798 (Creek Lane) and Route 614 (South Middle Road) for replacement of bridge over Mill Creek. Follow posted detour. Estimated completion October 10.


FREDERICK COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81
*UPDATE* Mile marker 302 to 300, southbound – Overnight single lane closures for grading and bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through the night of September 4. Left shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 widening project. 
*NEW* Mile marker 308 to 310, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday night.

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 7 (Berryville Pike) – Westbound left lane closures and crossover closure between Clarke County line and Route 659 (Valley Mill Road) for crossover reconstruction and turn lane extension, 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through August 22.
Route 7 (Berryville Pike) – Eastbound right lane closures between Route 656 (Greenwood Road) and Route 659 (Valley Mill Road) for utility work, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 22.
*NEW* Route 11 (Martinsburg Pike) – Northbound and southbound overnight single lane closures near I-81 interchange for inspection of I-81 overpass bridges, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday night. 
Route 11 (Martinsburg Pike) – Southbound right lane closures just past Route 37 interchange for painting of overpass bridge, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday (August 17).
Route 50/17 (Millwood Pike) – Eastbound single-lane closures between Route 796 (Purdue Drive) and Clarke County line painting operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Thursday night.
*NEW* Route 50 (Northwestern Pike) – Eastbound right lane closures between Route 654 (Poorhouse Road) and Route 803 (Round Hill Road) for tree trimming, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. August 13 – 20. 

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Clarke County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour. 


CLARKE COUNTY
 
PRIMARY ROADS
*NEW* Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound right lane and shoulder closures between Audley Lane/East Main Street and just west of Route 340 interchange for bridge inspection, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday (August 9).
Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound and westbound overnight single lane closures between Route 601 (Blueridge Mountain Road) and Route 612 (Shepherds Mill Road) for shoulder repaving, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday night.

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Frederick County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour. 


WARREN COUNTY 
 
INTERSTATE 66
*UPDATE* Mile marker 2 to 0, westbound – Shoulder closures for road work related to I-81 southbound widening, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through September 5.
Mile marker 11 to 12, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures for bridge painting, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 31. 
*NEW* Mile marker 15 to 14, westbound – Right shoulder closures for utility work, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Tuesday.
*UPDATE* Mile marker 15 to 6, westbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday.

INTERSTATE 81
Mile marker 299 to 300, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for grading and bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through the night of September 4. Left shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 widening project. 
*NEW* Mile marker 300 to 299, southbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. the nights of August 17-28.

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Page County line and Route 674 (Limeton Church Road) for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nights through September 5.

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 610 (Bucks Mill Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 55 (Strasburg Road) and Route 626 (Andrews Road) for bridge repairs. Estimated completion August 15.
*NEW* Route 624 (Morgan Ford Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road) and Route 645 (Manassas Run Road) for inspection of I-66 overpass bridges, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road) – Flagger traffic control near intersections with Route 603 (Oregon Hollow Road) and FR-285 (Gap Road) for painting of I-66 overpass bridge, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 31. 
Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Lane or shoulder closures as needed between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) during final stages of bridge and roadway work. Estimated completion September 2025.


Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. VDOT reminds motorists to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
