STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
 
INTERSTATE 64
Mile marker 21 to 18, westbound – Alternating lane closures for pavement resurfacing, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through July 19.
Mile marker 25 to 27, eastbound and westbound – Single lane closures 24/7 for maintenance to bridges over Sioux Avenue and Commercial Avenue (Clifton Forge). Estimated completion July 9.
*NEW* Mile marker 29 to 28, westbound – Right shoulder closures for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
*UPDATE* Mile marker 39 to 37, westbound – Mobile left lane closure for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. 

PRIMARY ROADS
Route 42 (Forty Two Road) – Closed during nighttime and overnight hours near Route 636 (Morgan Drive) for maintenance to bridge over railway, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights from July 7 to July 24. Detour in place. At other times, temporary traffic signals in operation and wide-load tractor trailers are prohibited. Estimated project completion September 1.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

*NEW* Route 56 (Tye River Turnpike) – Flagger traffic control for pavement patching at various locations between Route 608 (South River Road) and Nelson County line, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday to Friday.
*NEW* Route 501 (Magnolia Avenue, Buena Vista) – Flagger and pilot truck traffic control between Second Street and 15th Street/Sycamore Avenue for paving operations, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday through July 31.

INTERSTATE 81
*NEW* Mile marker 218 to 205, southbound – Right shoulder closures at various locations for guardrail upgrades, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. 
Mile marker 220 to 222, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for barrier wall removal and guardrail installation, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of July 31. Shoulder closures in both directions 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Expected completion in late summer 2025. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. 
*UPDATE* Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures southbound for bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday nights. Southbound exit 221 off-ramp to I-64 limited to a single lane as needed for overhead bridge work. Northbound and southbound shoulder closures 24/7 through spring 2026. Route 635 (Mount Vernon Road) – Overnight flagger traffic control between Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) and Route 639 (Wayne Avenue) for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through night of July 30.
Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road/Mount Torrey Road) – Flagger traffic control between Nelson County line and Waynesboro town limits for pavement marking, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Thursday.

Exit 240, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures along ramps to and from Route 257 for construction of additional turn lanes, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through August 1.
Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Only right turns allowed from off-ramp onto Route 33 through mid-August. Occasional lane closures as needed, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.  Shoulder closures in place 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge and interchange project with completion expected in fall 2026.

Be alert for travel-lane shifts. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement with expected completion in September 2026.

Route 340 (Winchester Road) – Northbound and southbound single-lane closures between Route 637 (Guard Hill Road) and Route 655 (Country Club Road) for painting of Crooked Run bridge and the I-66 bridge over 340, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through July 20. 

SECONDARY ROADS
Route 610 (Bucks Mill Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 55 (Strasburg Road) and Route 626 (Andrews Road) for bridge repairs, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through August 18. 

Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) for construction of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Follow posted detour. Estimated completion December 2025.
