STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

*NEW* Mile marker 0 to 36, eastbound and westbound – Overnight single-lane closures at various locations for pavement marking, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Tuesday nights.

*NEW* Mile marker 10, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday.

Mile marker 21 to 18, westbound – Alternating lane closure for pavement resurfacing, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through June 23.

Mile marker 25 to 27, eastbound and westbound – Single lane closures 24/7 for maintenance to bridges over Sioux Avenue and Commercial Avenue (Clifton Forge). Estimated completion July 9.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 42 (Forty Two Road) – Temporary traffic signal in operation 24/7 near Route 636 (Morgan Drive) intersection for maintenance to bridge over railway, through September 1. Wide-load tractor trailers prohibited.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

INTERSTATE 81

*NEW* Mile marker 174 to 205, northbound and southbound – Overnight mobile lane closures for vegetation control, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights.

*NEW* Mile marker 174 to 186, northbound – Right shoulder closures for debris removal, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

*NEW* Mile marker 188 to 190, northbound – Mobile right shoulder closures for surveying, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 Business (North Main Street, Lexington) – Flagger traffic control between Massie Street and Hook Lane for utility work, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through June 27. Traffic restrictions are for pedestrian-access improvement project with scheduled completion in August 2025.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 712 (Wades Road) – Road closed to through traffic between Route 726 (McElwee Road) and Route 729 (Back Draft Road/Davis Hill Road) for replacement of bridge over Cedar Grove Branch. Estimated completion Thursday. Follow posted detour.

Route 4251 (Thornhill Road, Lexington) – Flagger traffic control between Route 251 (Link Road) and Welsh Park Place for utility work, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for grading, pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, pavement patching, shoulder repairs and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 220 (Jackson River Road) – Shoulder closures near Monterey town limits for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*NEW* Route 250 (Highland Turnpike) – Shoulder closures near Route 656 (Bertie Lane) intersection for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pothole patching, brush cutting and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 654 (Doe Hill Road) – Shoulder closures near Route 645 (Mansion House Road) intersection for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*NEW* Route 678 (Bullpasture River Road) – Shoulder closures near Route 9506 (Deer Meadow Drive) intersection for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

AUGUSTA COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

*NEW* Mile marker 87 to 99, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures at various locations including Exit 94 and Exit 96 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

*NEW* Mile marker 87 to 99, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Wednesday and Friday.

Mile marker 97 to 87, westbound – Overnight single lane closures for pavement treatment, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of June 26.

Exit 99, eastbound – Narrowing of off-ramp for bridge painting, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through June 30.

INTERSTATE 81

*NEW* Mile marker 206 to 235, northbound and southbound – Overnight single-lane closures for roadside mowing, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Mile marker 220 to 222, northbound and southbound – Overnight southbound right-lane closure for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday night. Shoulder closures in both directions 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Expected completion in late summer 2025. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.

Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures northbound for survey work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday nights. Overnight left lane closures southbound for bridge work and median-access construction, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of June 26. Exit 221 southbound off-ramp to I-64 limited to a single lane through summer 2025. Northbound and southbound shoulder closures 24/7 through spring 2026. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.

Mile marker 223 to 221, southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for bridge maintenance, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday night.

Mile marker 226 to 230, northbound and southbound – Overnight single-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and daytime shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for bridge painting. Estimated completion July 31.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 233 to 231, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closure for rock and soil testing, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights. Right shoulder closures, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 254 (Ivy Street, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between King Avenue and Waynesboro western city limits for underground utility work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through June 30.

*NEW* Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) – Shoulder closures near Route 865 (Rockfish Road) intersection for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 602 (Summerdean Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 603 (Cales Springs Road) and Route 677 (Shemariah Road) for bridge rehabilitation through Wednesday. Follow posted detour.

*NEW* Route 608 (Battlefield Road) – Shoulder closures near Route 774 (Piedmont Road) intersection for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between South Oak Lane and Chinquapin Drive through June 30 for paving work related to Waynesboro Southern Corridor project.

*NEW* Route 635 (Mount Vernon Road) – Overnight flagger traffic control between Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) and Route 639 (Wayne Avenue) for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through night of July 30.

Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between Miami Avenue and Purdue Street through June 30 for paving work related to Waynesboro Southern Corridor project.

*NEW* Route 710 (Edison Creek Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 709 (Smoky Row Road) and Route 708 (Glebe School Road) for replacement of bridge with concrete pipe, June 23 – July 2. Follow posted detour.

*UPDATE* Route 773 (Westview School Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 775 (Buttermilk Road) and Route 778 (Knightly Mill Road) for rock and soil testing, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 5119 (Oak Lane, Waynesboro) – Local traffic only between Lyndhurst Road and Delphine Avenue through June 30 for paving work related to Waynesboro Southern Corridor project. Flagger traffic control for local drivers, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Through traffic will be detoured.

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 237 to 238, northbound and southbound – Northbound and southbound left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.

*UPDATE* Exit 240, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures along ramps to and from Route 257 for construction of additional turn lanes, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through August 1.

Mile marker 241 to 253, northbound and southbound – Occasional lane closures as needed, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Shoulder closures in place 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge and interchange project with completion expected in fall 2026.

*NEW* Mile marker 242 to 243, northbound and southbound – Overnight right lane closures for inspection of bridge over Blacks Run, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday night.

*NEW* Mile marker 243 to 246, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for inspection of Stone Spring Road overpass bridge, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday night.

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 11 (North Valley Pike) – Northbound right shoulder closures between New Beginnings Lane and Route 721 (Fellowship Road) for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger traffic control between Laurel Woods Lane and Switzer Lake Road/Skidmore Fork for paving, line-painting and guardrail work related to road widening and curve improvements, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through July 1.

Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Single-lane traffic between MLK Jr. Way and I-81 interchange. Two lanes in each direction between I-81 interchange and Linda Lane/Burgess Road. Be alert for travel-lane shifts. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement with expected completion in September 2026.

Route 211 (New Market Road, Timberville) – Flagger traffic control between Route 1514 (Virginia Avenue) and Route 1515 (Center Street) for moving heavy materials, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through June 27.

Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Temporary traffic signal between Route 1601 (New Haven Road) and Route 1605 (Water Street) for maintenance to North River bridge, 24/7 through June 30. Vehicle width restriction 11 feet.  

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 644 (Resort Drive) – Closed between Silverstone Lane and Woodstone Drive for paving operations and turn-lane construction, through about July 31. Follow posted detour.

Route 682 (Friedens Church Road) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures between I-81 interchange and Route 867 (North River Road) for road widening project, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through July 1.

Route 717 (Indian Trail Road) – Mobile lane closures between Route 724 (Trinity Church Road) and Route 724 (Flook Lane) for tree trimming operations, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Wednesday.

Route 7 (Berryville Pike) – Eastbound right lane closures between Route 656 (Greenwood Road) and Route 659 (Valley Mill Road) for utility work, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through June 27.

*NEW* Route 11 (Valley Pike) – Single lane closures just north of Stephens City town limits for turn lane construction onto Tigney Drive, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Friday.

*NEW* Route 17/50 (Millwood Pike) – Overnight eastbound and westbound alternating lane closures between Route 522 (Front Royal Pike) and Route 796 (Purdue Drive) for pavement marking, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday night.

Route 17/50 (Millwood Pike) – Eastbound and westbound left lane closures between Route 655 (Sulphur Spring Road) and Route 781 (Custer Avenue/Prince Frederick Drive) for turn lane construction, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through July 4.

*NEW* Route 37 – Overnight northbound and southbound single lane closures between Route 11 (Martinsburg Pike) and Route 847 (Tasker Road) for pavement marking, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Thursday night.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Clarke County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour.

*NEW* Route 1435 (First Manassas Place) – Flagger traffic control between Route 642 (Tasker Road) and the dead end for paving operations, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through June 27.

 

CLARKE COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 7 – Overnight alternating lane closures between Route 601 (Raven Rocks Road) and Route 632 (Crums Church Road) for pavement marking, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday night.  

*NEW* Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Alternating lane closures between Route 608 (Parshall Road) and Route 608 (Wickliffe Road) for pipe installs, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

*NEW* Route 50 (John Mosby Highway) – Overnight alternating lane closures between Route 601 (Blue Ridge Mountain Road) and Route 644 (Ginns Road) for pavement marking, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday night.  

*NEW* Route 340 (Lord Fairfax Highway) – Overnight alternating lane closures between Route 658 (White Post Road) and West Virginia state line for pavement marking, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday night.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Frederick County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour.

*NEW* Route 608 (Wickliffe Road) – Closed for pipe replacement near intersection with Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway), 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Wednesday. Detour in place.

 

WARREN COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66

Mile marker 2 to 0, westbound – Shoulder closures for road work related to I-81 southbound widening, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through July 4.

*NEW* Mile marker 14 to 15, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for utility work, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 15 to 0, westbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 299 to 300, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures for median barrier installation and construction equipment entrances, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of July 3. Daytime shoulder closures for sign work, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through July 4. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 widening project.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 340 (Winchester Road) – Northbound and southbound single-lane closures between Route 637 (Guard Hill Road) and Route 655 (Country Club Road) for painting of Crooked Run bridge and the I-66 bridge over 340, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through June 30.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) for construction of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Follow posted detour. Estimated completion December 2025.

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. VDOT reminds motorists to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
