STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
 
INTERSTATE 64

*UPDATE* Mile marker 9 to 29, eastbound – Mobile right shoulder closures for debris cleanup, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

Mile marker 21 to 18, westbound – Alternating lane closure for pavement resurfacing, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through June 6.

Mile marker 25 to 27, eastbound and westbound – Single lane closures 24/7 for maintenance to bridges over Sioux Avenue and Commercial Avenue (Clifton Forge). Estimated completion July 9.

*NEW* Mile marker 38 to 40, eastbound – Mobile right shoulder closures for debris cleanup, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 42 (Forty Two Road) – Temporary traffic signal in operation 24/7 near Route 636 (Morgan Drive) intersection for maintenance to bridge over railway, through September 1. Wide-load tractor trailers prohibited.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for ditch work, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs, pipe replacement and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

INTERSTATE 64

*NEW* Mile marker 41 to 57, eastbound – Mobile right shoulder closures for debris removal, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

INTERSTATE 81

*NEW* Mile marker 178 to 176, southbound – Overnight right lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

*NEW* Mile marker 183 to 186, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

Mile marker 188 to 192, northbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of June 12.

*NEW* Mile marker 191 to 195, northbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on the nights of June 1 to July 31. Overnight closures as needed for exit 191 entrance ramp from I-64.

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Northbound right lane closures between Route 706 (Borden Grant Trail) and Route 56 (Tye River Turnpike) for paving and shoulder improvements, 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to Friday.

Route 11 Business (North Main Street, Lexington) – Flagger traffic control between Massie Street and Hook Lane for utility work, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through June 27. Traffic restrictions are for pedestrian-access improvement project with scheduled completion in August 2025.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 712 (Wades Road) – Road closed to through traffic between Route 726 (McElwee Road) and Route 729 (Back Draft Road/Davis Hill Road) for replacement of bridge over Cedar Grove Branch. Estimated completion June 19. Follow posted detour.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for grading, pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, pavement patching, shoulder repairs and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pothole patching, brush cutting and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting, pipe cleaning, tree removal, adding stone to unpaved roads and ditch work, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 97 to 87, westbound – Overnight single lane closures for pavement treatment, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of June 26.

Exit 99, eastbound – Narrowing of off-ramp for bridge painting, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through June 30.

INTERSTATE 81

*NEW* Mile marker 205 to 208, northbound – Overnight right lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 215 to 218, northbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

*NEW* Mile marker 218 to 222, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Mile marker 220 to 222, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for bridge replacement and roadway construction as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Expected completion in fall 2025. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.
*UPDATE* Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Overnight left-lane closures southbound from mile marker 223 to 221 for bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on the nights of June 1 – June 26. Overnight left-lane closures northbound for guardrail work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights. Exit 221 southbound off-ramp to I-64 limited to a single lane through summer 2025. Mile marker 226 to 230, northbound and southbound – Overnight single-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and daytime shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for bridge painting. Estimated completion July 31.

Route 254 (Ivy Street, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between King Avenue and Waynesboro western city limits for underground utility work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through June 30.

*UPDATE* Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Northbound and southbound lane closures for utility work between Route 252 (Middlebrook Road) interchange and Route 11 (Lee-Jackosn Highway) interchange, 9 a.m. to 12 noon Wednesday to Friday.

SECONDARY ROADS

*UPDATE* Route 602 (Summerdean Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 603 (Cales Springs Road) and Route 677 (Shemariah Road) for bridge rehabilitation through June 18. Follow posted detour.

*UPDATE* Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between South Oak Lane and Chinquapin Drive through June 30 for paving work related to Waynesboro Southern Corridor project.

Route 635 (Barterbrook Road) – Closed between I-81 frontage roads (FR-217 and FR-218) for bridge replacement as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Follow posted detour. Expected completion July 9.

*NEW* Route 656 (Offliter Road) – Closed between Route 608 (Cold Springs Road) and Route 657 (Indian Ridge Road) for railroad crossing maintenance, 6 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday evening. Follow posted detour.

*UPDATE* Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between Miami Avenue and Purdue Street through June 30 for paving work related to Waynesboro Southern Corridor project.  

Route 773 (Westview School Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 775 (Buttermilk Road) and Route 778 (Knightly Mill Road) for rock and soil testing, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

Route 775 (Buttermilk Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 11 (Lee Highway) and Route 773 (Westview School Road) for rock and soil testing, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.

*UPDATE* Route 5119 (Oak Lane, Waynesboro) – Local traffic only between Lyndhurst Road and Delphine Avenue through June 30 for paving work related to Waynesboro Southern Corridor project. Flagger traffic control for local drivers, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Through traffic will be detoured.

INTERSTATE 81

*UPDATE* Mile marker 237 to 264, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for pavement marker installations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of June 2.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 234 to 237, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures northbound for installation of concrete barriers, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Friday night. Overnight southbound left lane closures for guardrail work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Wednesday nights. Northbound and southbound left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.  

*NEW* Mile marker 241 to 242, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for inspection of Route 867 and Route 990 overpass bridges, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday night.

Exit 240, northbound and southbound – Overnight on- or off-ramp closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through night of June 5. Follow posted detour.

Exit 240, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures along ramps to and from Route 257 for construction of additional turn lanes, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through July 1.

*NEW* Mile marker 241 to 242, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for inspection of Route 704 overpass bridge, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Tuesday night.

Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Occasional overnight ramp and lane closures as needed, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.  Shoulder closures in place 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge and interchange project with completion expected in fall 2026.

*NEW* Mile marker 245 to 247, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures including along exit 245 ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

*NEW* Mile marker 252 to 253, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for inspection of Route 724 overpass bridge, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Tuesday night.

PRIMARY ROADS

*UPDATE* Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger traffic control between Route 613 (Clover Hill Road/Whitmore Shop Road) and Route 752 (Hinton Road) for pavement marking, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through June 13.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger traffic control between Laurel Woods Lane and Switzer Lake Road/Skidmore Fork for paving, line-painting and guardrail work related to road widening and curve improvements, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through July 1.

Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Single-lane traffic between MLK Jr. Way and I-81 interchange. Two lanes in each direction between I-81 interchange and Linda Lane/Burgess Road. Be alert for travel-lane shifts. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement with expected completion in September 2026.

Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Temporary traffic signal between Route 1601 (New Haven Road) and Route 1605 (Water Street) for maintenance to North River bridge, 24/7 through June 30. Vehicle width restriction 11 feet.  

*UPDATE* Route 257 (Ottobine Road/Mason Street) – Flagger traffic control between Route 748 (Thomas Spring Road) and Route 1211 (Main Street, Dayton) for pavement marking, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through June 13.

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 644 (Resort Drive) – Closed between Silverstone Lane and Woodstone Drive for paving operations and turn-lane construction, through about July 31. Follow posted detour.

Route 682 (Friedens Church Road) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures between I-81 interchange and Route 867 (North River Road) for road widening project, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through July 1.

Route 211 (Lee Highway) – Eastbound and westbound alternating lane closures at various locations between Route 340 South and Rappahannock County line for paving operations, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. through June 7.

Route 7 (Berryville Pike) – Eastbound right lane closures between Route 656 (Greenwood Road) and Route 659 (Valley Mill Road) for utility work, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through June 6.

Route 11 (Martinsburg Pike) – Southbound alternating lane closures at Route 37 overpass for bridge painting, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through June 11.

Route 17/50 (Millwood Pike) – Eastbound and westbound left lane closures between Route 655 (Sulphur Spring Road) and Route 781 (Custer Avenue/Prince Frederick Drive) for turn lane construction, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through July 4.

– Northbound and southbound right shoulder closures at various locations between Route 628 (Middle Road) overpass and Route 11 (Martinsburg Pike) for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Clarke County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Frederick County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour.

 

WARREN COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66

*NEW* Route 340 (Winchester Road) – Northbound and southbound single-lane closures between Route 637 (Guard Hill Road) and Riverton Road for painting of Crooked Run bridge, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through June 22.

SECONDARY ROADS

*UPDATE* Route 638 (Freezeland Road) – Flagger traffic control at I-66 overpasses for bridge inspections, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) for construction of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Follow posted detour. Estimated completion December 2025.

 

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. VDOT reminds motorists to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
