Traffic Alert

STAUNTON – The following is a list of maintenance and construction work that may affect traffic in the VDOT Staunton District, which consists of 11 counties in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. When traveling through a work zone, use extreme caution and be alert for lane closures and traffic-pattern changes.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64 

Mile marker 4 to 6, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for tree removal work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 31. 

Mile marker 8 to 7, westbound – Continuous single lane closure for maintenance to Ogle Creek bridge through March 27.

*NEW* Mile marker 10 to 16, eastbound and westbound – Single lane closures for bridge inspection, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

*NEW* Mile marker 14 to 26, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures including along Exits 14, 16 and 24 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 18 to 22, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for tree cutting and brush removal, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Mile marker 25 to 23, westbound – Single lane closures for bridge maintenance from 8 a.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Thursday. Estimated completion March 27.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 220 (Market Avenue, Iron Gate) – Flagger traffic control between Business-Route 220 (Verge Street) and Route 1706 (Commerce Avenue) for tree removal work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.

Business Route 220 (Verge Street) – Flagger traffic control between Route 42 (Market Avenue) and Clifton Forge town limits for tree removal work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.

Route 311 (Kanawha Trail) – Flagger traffic control between Route 604 (Snake Run Road) and Route 602 (Big Ridge Road) for tree removal work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for ditch work, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs, pipe replacement and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

INTERSTATE 64 

Mile marker 45 to 44, westbound – Right shoulder closures for tree removal work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 31.

*NEW* Mile marker 53 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures including along Exit 55 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*NEW* Mile marker 55 to 57, eastbound and westbound – Single lane closures for bridge inspection, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday.

INTERSTATE 81 

*UPDATE* Mile marker 174 to 191, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures including along Exits 188 and 191 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 252 (Brownsburg Turnpike) – Flagger traffic control between Route 39 (Maury River Road) and Route 710 (Swope Lane) for brush removal, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for grading, pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, pavement patching, shoulder repairs and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 220 (Potomac River Road) – Temporary traffic signal in operation between Route 632 (The Pines Road) and Route 629 (Strait Creek Road) for Strait Creek bridge replacement. Estimated completion August 2027.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pothole patching, brush cutting and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting, pipe cleaning, tree removal, and adding stone to unpaved roads, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 64 

Mile marker 100 to 99, westbound – Right shoulder closures for ditch cleaning, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

INTERSTATE 81 

*UPDATE* Mile marker 211 to 230, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures including along Exits 213 and 222 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 220 to 226, northbound and southbound – Full northbound closure 7 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday (March 14-15) for traffic-shift preparations. Northbound traffic will detour onto Route 262 between exits 220 and 225. Single-lane traffic on exit 221 southbound ramp to I-64 eastbound through March 30. Southbound right lane closures mile marker 223 to 222 for overhead sign installations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights (March 16-19). Shoulder closures northbound and southbound 24/7 through spring. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 234 to 238, northbound and southbound – Southbound overnight right lane closures for shoulder strengthening near Rockingham County line, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Thursday and Friday nights. Northbound and southbound left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes with estimated completion of late 2027.

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 11 (Commerce Road, Staunton) – Northbound and southbound lane closures between Greenville Avenue/Coalter Street) and Statler Boulevard for rock and soil testing, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 252 (Middlebrook Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 695 (Sugar Loaf Road) and Route 802 (Dynamite Road) for utility work, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 3.

Route 252 (Middlebrook Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 695 (Sugar Loaf Road) and Route 693 (Stingy Hollow Road) for fiber installation, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through March 27.

Route 254 (Hermitage Road) – Pilot truck and flagger traffic control at intersections with Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) and Waynesboro city limits for intersection improvements, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through June 5.

*UPDATE* Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Northbound right shoulder closures between I-81 interchange and Route 11 (Lee-Jackson Highway) interchange for fiber installation, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through April 3.

*NEW* Route 340 (Stuarts Draft Highway) – Overnight flagger and pilot truck traffic control between Route 657 (Indian Ridge Road) and Edelweiss Lane for shoulder widening operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nights March 16 – June 25.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road, Verona) – Occasional flagger traffic control and westbound turn-lane closures at Route 901 (Mill Place Parkway) for intersection improvements, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays through August 1.

Route 834 (Hickory Hill Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 631 (Ladd Road) and Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) for waterline installation, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through April 30.
Route 901 (Mill Place Parkway, Verona) – Occasional flagger traffic control near Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road) for intersection and roadway improvements, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays through August 1.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY 

INTERSTATE 81 

Mile marker 237 to 238, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes with estimated completion of late 2027.

Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Single lane closures as needed 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge and interchange project with completion expected in fall 2026.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Follow posted detour. Single-lane closures as needed between Hawkins Street and University Boulevard. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for bridge replacements and interchange improvements with expected completion in September.

Business Route 33 (Old Spotswood Trail, Elkton) – Flagger traffic control just east of Route 635 (River Road) for bridge painting, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through April 4.

*UPDATE* Route 340 (East Side Highway) – Shoulder closures near Route 649 (Island Ford Road/Berrytown Road) intersection for installing junction boxes and pulling wire, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through April 3.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

INTERSTATE 81 

Mile marker 268 to 270, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures for bridge maintenance, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 27.
Mile marker 292 to 283, southbound – Full closure for bridge-beam placement from 6 p.m. Saturday through 9 a.m. Sunday (March 21-22). Traffic detoured between Exits 291 and 284. Overnight single lane closures for repairs to Route 604 overpass bridge, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights and 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights through April 30.

Mile marker 294 to 299, Overnight single lane closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of April 30. Shoulder closures 24/7 through May. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 southbound widening project. 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) – Northbound and southbound single lane closures between Route 672 (Chapman Landing Road) and Route 605 (Hoover Road) for tree removal work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday. 

Route 55 (Front Royal Road) – Temporary signal controlling traffic 24/7 at Warren County line for maintenance to bridge over North Fork Shenandoah River, through April 3.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 604 (North Street/Fairview Road) – Road closed to through traffic between Summit Avenue (Woodstock) and Route 676 (Fravel Road) for maintenance to bridge over I-81 through April 30. Follow posted detour.

FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81 

Mile marker 300 to 302, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures southbound, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of April 30. Single shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 southbound widening project. 

*NEW* Mile marker 301 to 309, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures including along Exits 302 and 307 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Mile marker 304 to 325, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures for cable barrier installation, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through April 30. 

*NEW* Mile marker 317 to 318, northbound and southbound – Overnight slow roll traffic control (rolling roadblocks) for pulling utility lines, 12 midnight to 6 a.m. early Sunday morning (March 15).

*NEW* Mile marker 317 to 318, northbound and southbound – Overnight mobile lane or shoulder closures including along exit 317 ramps for survey work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday night (March 15).

Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures between Route 635 (Moose Road/Pierce Road) and Business Route 7 (West Main Street) for fiber installation, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 1.

Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound right lane closures between Route 643 (Retreat Road) and Route 604 (Ebenezer Road) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Monday.

Business Route 7 (West Main Street, Berryville) – Flagger traffic control between Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) and Route 636 (Tom Whitacre Circle/Westwood Road) for fiber installation, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 1.

*NEW* Route 340 (Lord Fairfax Highway) – Northbound left lane closures traffic control between Route 611 (Summit Point Road) and Route 612 (Shepherds Mill Road) for utility work, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Mile marker 299 to 300, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures northbound, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of April 30. Single shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 southbound widening project. 

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 55 (Strasburg Road) – Temporary signal controlling traffic 24/7 at Shenandoah County line for maintenance to bridge over North Fork Shenandoah River, through April 3.

Route 522/340 (Winchester Road) – Southbound shoulder closures between Route 655 (Crooked Run Boulevard) and I-66 interchange ramp for construction of turn lane extension, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 27.
