STAUNTON – The following is a list of maintenance and construction work that may affect traffic in the VDOT Staunton District, which consists of 11 counties in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands.
Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. When traveling through a work zone, use extreme caution and be alert for lane closures and traffic-pattern changes.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY
INTERSTATE 64
Mile marker 4 to 6, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for tree removal work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through March 31.
Mile marker 8 to 7, westbound – Continuous single lane closure for maintenance to Ogle Creek bridge through March 27.
*NEW* Mile marker 10 to 16, eastbound and westbound – Single lane closures for bridge inspection, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
*NEW* Mile marker 14 to 26, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures including along Exits 14, 16 and 24 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
*UPDATE* Mile marker 18 to 22, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for tree cutting and brush removal, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Mile marker 25 to 23, westbound – Single lane closures for bridge maintenance from 8 a.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Thursday. Estimated completion March 27.

Route 220 (Market Avenue, Iron Gate) – Flagger traffic control between Business-Route 220 (Verge Street) and Route 1706 (Commerce Avenue) for tree removal work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.
Business Route 220 (Verge Street) – Flagger traffic control between Route 42 (Market Avenue) and Clifton Forge town limits for tree removal work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.
Route 311 (Kanawha Trail) – Flagger traffic control between Route 604 (Snake Run Road) and Route 602 (Big Ridge Road) for tree removal work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Route 220 (Potomac River Road) – Temporary traffic signal in operation between Route 632 (The Pines Road) and Route 629 (Strait Creek Road) for Strait Creek bridge replacement. Estimated completion August 2027.
Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pothole patching, brush cutting and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Mile marker 100 to 99, westbound – Right shoulder closures for ditch cleaning, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 211 to 230, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures including along Exits 213 and 222 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
*UPDATE* Mile marker 220 to 226, northbound and southbound – Full northbound closure 7 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday (March 14-15) for traffic-shift preparations. Northbound traffic will detour onto Route 262 between exits 220 and 225. Single-lane traffic on exit 221 southbound ramp to I-64 eastbound through March 30. Southbound right lane closures mile marker 223 to 222 for overhead sign installations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights (March 16-19). Northbound and southbound left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes with estimated completion of late 2027.

Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road, Verona) – Occasional flagger traffic control and westbound turn-lane closures at Route 901 (Mill Place Parkway) for intersection improvements, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays through August 1.
Route 834 (Hickory Hill Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 631 (Ladd Road) and Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) for waterline installation, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through April 30.
Route 901 (Mill Place Parkway, Verona) – Occasional flagger traffic control near Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road) for intersection and roadway improvements, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays through August 1.

INTERSTATE 81
Mile marker 237 to 238, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes with estimated completion of late 2027.
Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Single lane closures as needed 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge and interchange project with completion expected in fall 2026.
PRIMARY ROADS
Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Follow posted detour. Single-lane closures as needed between Hawkins Street and University Boulevard. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for bridge replacements and interchange improvements with expected completion in September.
Business Route 33 (Old Spotswood Trail, Elkton) – Flagger traffic control just east of Route 635 (River Road) for bridge painting, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through April 4.
*UPDATE* Route 340 (East Side Highway) – Shoulder closures near Route 649 (Island Ford Road/Berrytown Road) intersection for installing junction boxes and pulling wire, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through April 3.
