Staunton District Traffic Alert for March 31 - April 4, 2025

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

*UPDATE* Mile marker 30 to 41, eastbound – Mobile right shoulder closures for tree trimming operations, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

*NEW* Mile marker 41 to 0, westbound – Mobile right shoulder closures for brush cutting, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 42 (Forty Two Road) – Flagger traffic control near Route 636 (Morgan Drive) intersection for maintenance to bridge over railway, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through June 30.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 696 (Selma-Low Moor Road) – Right shoulder closures near intersection with Route 1002 (Richmond Street) for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for ditch work, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs, pipe replacement and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

BATH COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 43 to 48, eastbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for traffic sensor installations, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

INTERSTATE 81

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Northbound and southbound alternating lane closures between Route 716 (Timber Ridge Road) and Route 645 (Valley Pike) for tree removal operations, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Route 11 (North Main Street, Lexington) – Flagger traffic control between Hook Lane and Massie Street, generally weekdays during daylight hours. No on-street parking. Traffic restrictions are for pedestrian-access improvement project with scheduled completion in August 2025.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

HIGHLAND COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 250 (Mountain Turnpike) – Flagger traffic control between Route 601 (Bear Mountain Road) and West Virginia line for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 31 – April 10.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pothole patching, brush cutting and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting, pipe cleaning, tree removal, adding stone to unpaved roads and ditch work, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

AUGUSTA COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 95 to 94, westbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for rock and soil testing, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of April 3.

*NEW* Mile marker 95 to 98, eastbound and westbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for bridge inspections, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 95 to 98, eastbound and westbound – Overnight single-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and daytime shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for bridge painting. Estimated completion April 30.

*UPDATE* Exit 99, eastbound – Overnight narrowing of ramps to and from Route 250 for bridge painting, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of May 30.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 220 to 222, northbound and southbound – Overnight southbound left lane closures for concrete deliveries, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday to Thursday nights. Northbound and southbound shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for bridge replacement and roadway construction as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Expected completion in fall 2025. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.

Exit 221, southbound – Left or right lane closed along ramp to I-64 eastbound beginning due to overpass bridge work related to I-81 widening project. Ramp lane closures expected to continue through summer 2025.

Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Southbound Exit 221 off-ramp limited to a single lane through summer 2025. Northbound and southbound shoulder closures 24/7 through spring 2026. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.

Exit 225, northbound – Right shoulder closures along off-ramp for utility work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 226 to 230, northbound and southbound – Overnight single-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. and daytime shoulder closures from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for bridge painting. Estimated completion May 31.

*NEW* Exit 227, northbound – Right shoulder closures for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*NEW* Mile marker 231 to 233, northbound and southbound – Overnight right lane closures for survey work, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. the nights of March 30 to April 3.

Mile marker 234 to 237, northbound and southbound – Overnight right lane closures with exit 235 ramp closures as needed due to shoulder strengthening, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday through Saturday nights. Right shoulder closures at various locations during daylight hours. Work-zone speed limit 60 miles per hour 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.  

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 42 (Buffalo Gap Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Route 254 (Parkersburg Turnpike) and Buffalo Gap High School for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Thursday.

Route 250 (Three Notched Mountain Highway) – Flagger traffic control with pilot truck between Waynesboro eastern city limits and I-64 Afton interchange for pipe replacement, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 250 (Three Notched Mountain Highway) – Eastbound and westbound right shoulder closures near I-64 exit 99 interchange for painting of interstate overpass bridges, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through March 31.

*NEW* Route 254 (Parkersburg Turnpike) – Flagger traffic control between Route 42 (Buffalo Gap Highway) and Route 876 (Swoope Road) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Thursday.

*NEW* Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Shoulder closures for utility work between I-81 exit 225 interchange and Route 11 (Commerce Road), 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between South Oak Lane and Chinquapin Drive through May 2025 for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor.

Route 626 (Cider Mill Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 616 (Morningside Drive/Salem Church Road) and Route 745 (Mt. Pisgah Road) for replacement of bridge with concrete pipe. Estimated completion April 7. Follow posted detour.

Route 635 – Mobile lane closures at various locations between Staunton southern city limits and Route 639 (Wayne Avenue) for pavement marking, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 11.

Route 635 (Barterbrook Road) – Closed between I-81 frontage roads (FR-217 and FR-218) for bridge replacement as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Follow posted detour. Expected completion in July 2025.

Route 664 (Mount Torry Road) – Mobile lane closures between Waynesboro southern city limits and Nelson County line for pavement marking, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 11.

Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between Miami Avenue and Purdue Street for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor through June 2025.

*NEW* Route 707 (Trimbles Mill Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 705 (North Mountain Road) and Route 713 (Shuey Road) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 31 through April 17.

Route 5119 (Oak Lane, Waynesboro) – Local traffic only between Lyndhurst Road and Windsor Road through April 30 for road work related to Waynesboro Southern Corridor project. Flagger traffic control for local drivers, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Through traffic will be detoured.

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

*NEW* Mile marker 237 to 242, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for debris removal and other maintenance work, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Mile marker 238 to 237, northbound and southbound – Overnight right lane closures for shoulder strengthening through June 2025, beginning on southbound I-81. Work will generally take place Monday through Friday nights from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Work-zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.  

Exit 240, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures along ramps to and from Route 257 for construction of additional turn lanes, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through July 1.

Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight ramp closures and alternating lane closures as needed, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Expect delays. 24/7 shoulder closures. Traffic restrictions are related to Route 33 bridge and interchange project with completion expected in September 2026.

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Eastbound and westbound mobile lane closures for pavement marking between Harrisonburg city limits and Greene County line, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

*NEW* Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Eastbound and westbound right shoulder closures near Elkton eastern town limits for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Westbound alternating lane closures near Route 340 interchange for maintenance to bridge over Route 340, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through April 4.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Mobile traffic control between Route 612 (Peake Mountain Road) and Route 734 (Bank Church Road) for pavement marking, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 11.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger traffic control between Laurel Woods Lane and Switzer Lake Road/Skidmore Fork for paving, line-painting and guardrail work related to road widening and curve improvements, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through May 20.

Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Single-lane traffic between Vine Street/Hawkins Street and Evelyn Byrd Avenue during daytime or overnight hours due to bridge construction. Occasional full closures as needed. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement with expected completion in September 2026.

*NEW* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Eastbound and westbound mobile lane closures for pavement marking between Harrisonburg city limits and Route 340 (Eastside Highway), 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 4 to April 7.

Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Mobile traffic control between Route 1163 (Rosedale Drive) and Route 331 (Alumnae Drive) for pavement marking, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 11.

Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Temporary traffic signal between Route 1601 (New Haven Road) and Route 1605 (Water Street) for maintenance to North River bridge, 24/7 through June 30. Vehicle width restriction 11 feet.  

*NEW* Route 256 (Third Street, Grottoes) – Mobile lane closures for pavement marking between Augusta County line and Route 340 (Augusta Avenue), 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 4 through April 7.

Route 257 (Ottobine Road) – Mobile lane closures between Route 775 (Judge Paul Road) and Route 42 Business (Main Street, Dayton) for pavement marking, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through April 11.

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Route 682 (Friedens Church Road) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures between I-81 interchange and Route 867 (North River Road) for road widening project, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through July 1.

Route 800 (McCauley Drive, Timberville) –Flagger traffic control between Route 42 (South Main Street/Timber Way) and Fourth Avenue for sidewalk construction, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through May 1.

Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) – Overnight single lane closures between Strasburg northern town limits and Route 825 (Hite Lane) for signal inspections, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday night.

Route 11 (Main Street, Woodstock) – Overnight flagger traffic control between Route 1961 (Spring Street) and Route 1960 (North Street) for signal inspections, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday night.

Route 42 (West Reservoir Road, Woodstock) – Overnight flagger traffic control between the I-81 ramp and Hisey Avenue for signal inspections, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night.

Route 211 (West Old Cross Road, New Market) – Overnight flagger traffic control between the I-81 off ramp and Route 1003 (Cadet Road) for signal inspections, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night.

Mile marker 300 to 299, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for pavement and guardrail work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of April 24. Daytime shoulder closures for sign installations, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through April 18. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 widening project.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 55 (John Marshall Highway) – Overnight flagger traffic control at intersections with Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road) and Route 79 (Apple Mountain Road) for signal inspections, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday night.

Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) – Overnight flagger traffic control at intersections with Route 649 (Browntown Road) and Route 619 (Rivermont Drive) for signal inspections 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday night.

Route 340 (Winchester Road) – Overnight single lane closures between Route 627 (Reliance Road) Route 661 (Fairground Road) for signal inspections, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday night.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) for construction of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Follow posted detour. Estimated completion December 2025.

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. VDOT reminds motorists to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
