STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. When traveling through a work zone, use extreme caution and be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

*NEW* Exit 14, eastbound – Right shoulder closures along off-ramp for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

*NEW* Mile marker 24 to 26, eastbound and westbound – Right lane closures for bridge maintenance, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through October 24.

*NEW* Mile marker 26 to 24, westbound – Right lane closures for pavement repairs, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 42 (Forty Two Road) – Single-lane traffic near Route 636 (Morgan Drive) for maintenance to bridge over railway. Temporary signals control traffic 24/7. Wide-load tractor trailers are prohibited. Estimated project completion October 31.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for ditch work, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs, pipe replacement and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

*NEW* Exit 175, northbound – On-ramp narrowed during overnight hours for pavement repairs, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

Mile marker 188 to 180, southbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday to Thursday through night of October 23.

*UPDATE* Route 130 (Rockbridge Road/Wert Faulkner Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Route 501 (Glasgow Highway) and Route 860 (Douglas Way) for fiber installation, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

*NEW* Route 608 (Forge Road)– Flagger traffic control between Route 680 (Falling Spring Road) and Route 679 (Lone Jack Road) for fiber installation, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday.

HIGHLAND COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 250 (West Main Street, Monterey) – Nighttime flagger traffic control between Spruce Street and Water Street for utility work, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pothole patching, brush cutting and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

INTERSTATE 64

INTERSTATE 81

*UPDATE* Mile marker 205 to 208, northbound – Overnight right lane closures for pavement patching, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

Mile marker 218 to 221, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday night.

Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Single-lane traffic on southbound I-81 ramp to I-64 eastbound at exit 221 through November 2025. Northbound and southbound shoulder closures 24/7 through spring 2026. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.

*NEW* Mile marker 222 to 224, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures including along Exit 222 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*NEW* Mile marker 224 to 226, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge inspection, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., the night of October 18.

*NEW* Mile marker 232 to 237, northbound and southbound – Brief closures for installation of overhead utility lines, 6 a.m. to 12 noon Sunday (October 19).

Mile marker 234 to 237, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.

*NEW* Route 693 (Cedar Green Road) – Temporary traffic signal in operation 24/7 between Route 703 (Buttermilk Spring Road) and Route 703 (Hebron Road) for maintenance to bridge over railway. Estimated completion October 28.

Route 834 (Hickory Hill Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 631 (Ladd Road) and Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) for waterline installation, 7:30 to 4 p.m. through April 30, 2026.

INTERSTATE 81

*NEW* Mile marker 237 to 247, northbound and southbound – Brief closures for installation of overhead utility lines, 6 a.m. to 12 noon Sunday (October 19).

Mile marker 237 to 238, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.  

*UPDATE* Mile marker 238 to 250, northbound and southbound right shoulder closures including along Exit 240, Exit 245 and Exit 247 off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Mile marker 242 to 239, southbound – Overnight right lane and shoulder closures for bridge maintenance, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Sunday (October 12) night.

Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge and interchange project with completion expected in fall 2026.

*NEW* Exit 247, northbound and southbound – Multiple on- and off-ramps closed for interchange reconstruction, 6 p.m. Monday through 8 a.m. Friday (October 20-24). Follow posted detour.

PRIMARY ROADS

*UPDATE* Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger traffic control between Route 752 (Muddy Creek Road) and Route 734 (Bank Church Road) for utility work, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Wednesday.

*UPDATE* Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Full eastbound and westbound closure between MLK Jr. Way and Linda Lane/Burgess Road for bridge construction, 6 p.m. Monday through 8 a.m. Friday (October 20-24). Follow posted detour. Single-lane closures at other times as needed. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement with expected completion in September 2026.

*NEW* Route 253 (Port Republic Road) – Eastbound right shoulder closures near Route 726 (Stone Spring Road) intersection for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 722 (Armentrout Path) and Route 811 (Fridleys Gap Road) for replacement of bridge over Mountain Run, through Thursday. Follow posted detour.

Route 644 (Resort Drive) – Closed between Silverstone Lane and Woodstone Drive for paving operations and turn-lane construction, through about October 31. Follow posted detour.

Route 724 (Melrose Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 725 (Etna Road) and Route 11 (North Valley Pike), 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Friday.

*NEW* Route 340 – Flagger traffic control between Route 731 (Collins Avenue) and Route 658 (Pass Run Road) for fiber installation, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. October 13 – 30.

Route 340 – Flagger traffic control between Route 732 (Kites Corner Road) and Route 683 (Shenandoah River Road) for utility work, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Wednesday.

Route 340 – Flagger traffic control between Route 648 (Sandy Hook Road) and Route 660 (Kibler Hill Road) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through October 31.

SHENANDOAH COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 268 to 270, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for maintenance to bridges over North Fork Shenandoah River, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through October 30. Daytime shoulder closures, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through October 31.

Mile marker 270 to 272, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge maintenance, nights 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through the night of October 23.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 289 to 287, southbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday night.
