STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. When traveling through a work zone, use extreme caution and be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 24 to 26, eastbound and westbound – Right lane closures for bridge maintenance, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Friday.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 26 to 24, westbound – Right lane closures for pavement repairs, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Wednesday.

*NEW* Exit 35, westbound – Right shoulder closure along off-ramp for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 42 (Forty Two Road) – Single-lane traffic near Route 636 (Morgan Drive) for maintenance to bridge over railway. Temporary signals control traffic 24/7. Wide-load tractor trailers are prohibited. Estimated project completion October 31.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for ditch work, shoulder repairs, pothole repairs, pipe replacement and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

BATH COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 220 (Sam Snead Highway) – Mobile traffic control for pavement marking between Route 622 (Robinson Lane) and Highland County line, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday.  

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for shoulder repairs and pipe cleaning, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

*NEW* Mile marker 56 to 57, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

INTERSTATE 81

*NEW* Mile marker 183 to 184, northbound – Left shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday.

Mile marker 188 to 180, southbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday to Thursday nights.

*NEW* Mile marker 204 to 206, northbound – Overnight right lane and right shoulder closure for installation of traffic sensors, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

*UPDATE* Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Southbound overnight single-lane closures between Route 752 (Hunter Hill Road) and Route 631 (Old Buena Vista Road/Furrs Mill Road) for paving operations, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. through the night of November 6.

Route 130 (Rockbridge Road/Wert Faulkner Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Route 501 (Glasgow Highway) and Route 860 (Douglas Way) for fiber installation, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 608 (Forge Road)– Flagger traffic control between Route 680 (Falling Spring Road) and Route 679 (Lone Jack Road) for fiber installation, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for grading, pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, pavement patching, shoulder repairs and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

HIGHLAND COUNTY

PRIMARY ROADS

INTERSTATE 64

No lane closures reported.

INTERSTATE 81

*NEW* Mile marker 205 to 208, northbound – Overnight right lane closures for installation of traffic sensors, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 222 to 227, northbound and southbound – Overnight left-lane closures northbound for pavement work and barrier wall removal, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights. Single-lane traffic on southbound I-81 ramp to I-64 eastbound at exit 221 through November 2025. Northbound and southbound shoulder closures 24/7 through spring 2026. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.

*NEW* Mile marker 227 to 237, northbound and southbound – Overnight single-lane closures for pavement marking, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.

Mile marker 232 to 237, northbound and southbound – Brief closures for installation of overhead utility lines, 6 a.m. to 12 noon Sunday (October 19).  

Mile marker 234 to 237, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 11 (Commerce Road, Staunton) – Southbound right shoulder closures between Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) and Staunton city limits for traffic engineering, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

*NEW* Route 42 – Mobile traffic control for pavement marking between the Rockbridge County line and Rockingham County line, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*NEW* Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Southbound overnight right shoulder closures between I-81 southbound ramps at Exit 225 and Route 11 (Commerce Road) for traffic engineering, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 611 (Dooms Crossing Road) – Temporary traffic signal in operation 24/7 between Route 865 (Rockfish Road) and Route 340 (East Side Highway) for maintenance to bridge over South River. Estimated completion Friday.

Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road, Verona) – Occasional flagger traffic control and westbound turn-lane closures at Route 901 (Mill Place Parkway) for intersection improvements, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays through August 1, 2026.

Route 693 (Cedar Green Road) – Temporary traffic signal in operation 24/7 between Route 703 (Buttermilk Spring Road) and Route 703 (Hebron Road) for maintenance to bridge over railway. Estimated completion October 28.

Route 834 (Hickory Hill Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 631 (Ladd Road) and Route 640 (Goose Creek Road) for waterline installation, 7:30 to 4 p.m. through April 30, 2026.

Route 901 (Mill Place Parkway, Verona) – Occasional flagger traffic control near Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road) for intersection and roadway improvements, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays through August 1, 2026.

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. weekdays.

 

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

*NEW* Mile marker 237 to 240, northbound and southbound – Overnight single-lane closures for pavement marking, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights.  

Mile marker 237 to 247, northbound and southbound – Brief closures for installation of overhead utility lines, 6 a.m. to 12 noon Sunday (October 19).

Mile marker 237 to 238, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.  

*UPDATED* Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Alternating lane closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., and shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge and interchange projectwith completion expected in fall 2026.

*NEW* Exit 247, northbound and southbound – Multiple on- and off-ramps closed for interchange reconstruction, 6 p.m. Monday through 8 a.m. Friday. Follow posted detour.

PRIMARY ROADS

*UPDATE* Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Full eastbound and westbound closure between Carlton Street and Linda Lane/Burgess Road for bridge construction, 6 p.m. Monday through 8 a.m. Friday. Multiple ramps to and from I-81 also closed. Follow posted detours. Single-lane closures at other times as needed. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for bridge replacements and interchange improvements with expected completion in September 2026.

*NEW* Route 33 (Spotswood Trail/Rawley Pike) – Mobile traffic control between the Greene County line and West Virginia state line for pavement marking, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Friday and 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday nights.

*NEW* Route 276 (Cross Keys Road) – Mobile traffic control for pavement marking between the Augusta County line and Route 33 (Spotswood Trail), 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 644 (Resort Drive) – Closed between Silverstone Lane and Woodstone Drive for paving operations and turn-lane construction, through about October 31. Follow posted detour.

Route 340 – Flagger traffic control between Route 731 (Collins Avenue) and Route 658 (Pass Run Road) for fiber installation, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through October 30.

Route 340 – Flagger traffic control between Route 648 (Sandy Hook Road) and Route 660 (Kibler Hill Road) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through October 31.

Mile marker 268 to 270, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for maintenance to bridges over North Fork Shenandoah River, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through October 30. Daytime shoulder closures, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through October 31.

Mile marker 270 to 272, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge maintenance, nights 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday night.

Mile marker 290 to 286, southbound – Overnight single lane closures for installation of rumble strips and pavement markers, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through October 30.

Mile marker 294 to 299, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures southbound, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of November 6. Northbound and southbound shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 southbound widening project.

*NEW* Route 11 (Old Valley Pike)– Flagger traffic control for tree trimming between Route 839 (Landfill Road) and Route 605 (Hoover Road), 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*NEW* Route 185 (Stoney Creek Road) – Westbound right shoulder closed for sign work between Interstate 81 and Route 686 (South Ox Road), 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 604 (Fairview Road) – Temporary traffic signal in operation 24/7 between Woodstock town limits and Route 676 (Wetzel Road) for repairs to bridge over I-81. Estimated completion November 14.

*NEW* Route 605 (Hoover Road) – Westbound right shoulder closures for sign work near I-81 bridges, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Mile marker 304 to 325, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures for cable-barrier installation, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday nights. Estimated completion December 31.

*NEW* Route 7 (Berryville Pike) – Eastbound left-lane closures at I-81 interchange for turn-lane extension, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. October 20 through November 17.

Route 11 (North Valley Pike) – Right lane closures at Route 37 overpass for bridge painting, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through November 2.

Route 739 (Apple Pie Ridge Road) – Flagger traffic control between FR-Route 734 (Glentawber Road) and Route 672 (Catalpa Road/Hiatt Road) for fiber installation, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through November 20.

Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Clarke County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour.

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound and westbound single-lane closures near the Frederick County line for bridge painting, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through November 16.

Route 340 (Lord Fairfax Highway) – Alternating lane closures between Route 610 (Clifton Road) and Route 612 (Shepherds Mill Road for bridge joint repairs, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., through October 31.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 615 (Boom Road) – Flagger traffic control just north of Berryville town limits for painting of Route 7 overpass bridges, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through October 19.

Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Frederick County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour.

Mile marker 2 to 0, westbound – Shoulder closures for road work related to I-81 southbound widening, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through November 7.

*NEW* Route 340/522 (North Shenandoah Avenue) – Single-lane closures just north of Front Royal town limits for bridge inspection over railway and South Fork Shenandoah River, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

*UPDATED* Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road) – Flagger traffic control just west of intersection with Route 603 (Oregon Hollow Road) for painting of I-66 overpass bridges, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday night, October 25.
